  • Recommendation for grinder up to $1000 with removable hopper

    Hi,
I'd like to be able easily to swap out beans so am after suggestions for grinders up to $1000. I prefer doserless. Grinder use will be initially for plunger coffee. I am looking to purchase an espresso machine also in the near future. Thanks

Thanks Paul. To be more specific, I'm after a grinder where you can quickly take off the hopper to change beans rather than empty the whole grinder upside down. I anticipate using two different types of beans on a daily basis.

      Welcome C'nooby...

Definitely worth your while to drop into your local specialist retailers, if possible. and demo a few grinders that occupy that space within your budget - Lots to choose from at this price point so difficult to make a recommendation. Site Sponsor "Dimattina Coffee" should be able to help you out...

Another option to think about - at your price point you'll be looking at planar burr grinders.

Nothing whatsoever wrong with that, but assuming you're planning on running a blend for milk-based espresso and SOs, you might consider looking at an espresso-capable hand grinder. I switched from a commercial doser conical to planar, and wouldn't really recommend using one to switch between blend and SOs for a few reasons (which I can go into if you're interested, but the big ones are that you'll have a fair bit of wastage dialing in twice daily and grinding through residual beans in the grinder throat, which is unavoidable with any design afaict).

That being said, as others have said there are many options in this price range; everyone will most likely recommend the one they have [emoji6] so your best bet is to decide on what features you need, which are nice-to-have and what you want to rule out. To get you started, have a think about your workflow - do you want to grind directly into the portafilter, is a digital timer essential, do you plan to weigh your doses, are you happy to hold the portafilter while grinding or do you want hands-free operation etc. Then narrow down a shortlist based on those features.

Buy two grinders. You are going to go through a lot of beans adjusting for espresso after every change of bean. Slower brewing methods wont be as much of an issue though.

You can single dose any grinder easily enough but will waste beans getting rid of retained coffee grinds.

Thanks for the responses guys . After looking at the Rancilio Rocky I thought it was common for the hopper to be fixed but it seems that is the exception rather than the rule. I'll head off to Dimattina today to look at their range and will also look into other site sponsor offerings. Is there any disadvantage in buying equipment from retailers in other states? Two grinders (one will be used only for decaf) seems the way to go. I'll also research the sette

Herzog do you think the sette will grind coarsely enough for plunger coffee? Do you have one? Is it messy? If you have one what espresso machine do you have it paired with?

The Sette can grind for plunger, but it has probably too many fines. You would need to sift it to get a cleaner cup.

I agree. We recently sold a customer two grinders who was originally looking for a grinder he could swap out the hoppers on. By the time you adjust for beans and get it dialled in for the new blend you may have well spent the money wasted on beans on a second grinder.

In this case the customer purchase an ATOM as his main grinder an M2M for decaf.

There are a few names that immediately come to mind for grinders sub circa $500 that would fit your requirements.

Id suggest in no order Rocky, K3 , M2M or Eureka Mignon

                    Cheers

Thanks all for your input. I decided to start making espresso straight away (life is too short eh?), so bought a Rancilio Silvia and Baratza Sette 270. The affordability of the Sette made it possible to stretch my budget and buy the Silvia. I know it's an entry level machine, but it's apparently a good little unit and there seems to be a considerable increase in price to the next tier of machines. Have only seen u tube vids of the Sette, but looked good (a lil different?) and hopefully marries well with the Silvia in an aesthetic sense. Ive also purchased a better tamper than the plastic one that came with the Silvia, a knock box, ss jug, cleaning stuff and rubber mat. Prolly need a lil brush thingy to clean the group head (would a toothbrush suffice?). Do I need anything else? Ordered five senses beans (Dark Horse) which will arrive with the grinder early next week. I'll post a pic of the Silvia and Sette together if anyone is interested?

I find the double basket a lil small for 2 cups at once. Think I'll buy a Rancilio Silvia naked portafilter which comes with a larger basket. Is this a common upgrade?
