  • Robur E Single Dosing

    G'day folks

    Is there anyone out there who has/is successfully single dosed with a Robur E. if you could describe your workflow that would be great. I've read a few other forums but couldn't find much on the subject in relation to the Robur E in particular.

    Keen to hear of any successes particular when it comes to controlling pop-corning and getting a consistent grind without using a column of beans or other weight above the beans being ground.

    I do it on my Super Jolly E. I use a Sunbeam double filter that fits neatly in the chute to avoid popcorning. I have taken the mesh screen out to get better flow of the grinds into the chute, it causes some static so I have a little mesh kitchen basket in their funnel to cut down on static, I use a small artist style brush to sweep out the inside of cone and down into portafilter whitch has an Orphan Espresso funnel to keep the grinds where I want them.
    Not ideal for doing volume but works well for me at home doing a few coffees at a time with almost no grind retention!

      Thanks Greenman. Do you get any clumping?

      I read in another forum that someone polished the inside of the chute to make it more slippery but it was a very old thread and they didnt explain how they did the polishing. Keen to hear from others how to do the polishing. Another thread mentioned raising the back of the grinder by putting the back feet up on a block of wood that was wrapped in foam. It apparently made the grinds fall down the chute easier and also dampened some of the sound. Sounded like a good idea.

        The little basket inside the funnel catches a fair bit of grinds and I use the brush to clear the remainder into the portafilter, any clumps break up at this stage. When the wire screen was still at the front of the chute the grinds used to back up between the blades and the screen and it was impossible to keep it clear and clean.
        Before I used the mesh basket in the funnel I got heaps of static and it made a horrible mess!!Click image for larger version

            Popcorning - an unwanted 58mm tamper will work to cover the top (unwanted because you don't want to scratch the base of your $150 tamper ). Alternatively, you could use the funnel lid (the piece with membrane keypad) as a popcorn stopper.

            Clump/static - spray some water (the so-called RDT technique) onto the beans before grinding. Eliminates 99% static when applied correctly.

            Retention in the chute - remove the not-so-anti-static anti static screen. Use a brush to clear the chute. There's no need to polish the chute or modify the grinder in my opinion.

            I found that when single dosing on the Robur, you do need to stir the ground with bamboo stick/dissecting needle to get a very even pour (someone who is less fussy about the flow probably wouldn't bother). A bit more effort than hopper grinding, but you get a big conical grinder to work with little/zero retention.


            The video in the link above shows my workflow. Only missing the WDT step afterwards.

                I single dose my Robur-E.
                Weigh dose. No static screen. Sweep out with a little plastic wedge made from ice cream lid.
                I grind into a plastic cup - this deals with the issues static causes (ie grinds going everywhere but the P/F!).
                You have do have to use a much finer grind. When used 'as intended' my grind setting is around 7. For single dosing, 4.5

                Works pretty well once you get a handle on it.

                BTW popcorning is no real issue IMHO - but you just have to be willing to accept lesser grind consistency. Not that this makes a huge difference to flavour - but a little. (I do find the flavour better when using this grinder properly. But not enough to lose sleep - unlike some!)

                    Thanks for the feedback gents. Has anyone tried the back legs up on a wooden block idea? It apparently helps with reducing retention in the chute? I must say it doesn't sound ideal in terms of extra forces on one set of motor mountings.

                      No - not really necessary IMHO, and I wouldn't like to have a grinder of that weight sitting at an angle! If it goes, you'd crush a limb or put a hole in your floor boards - like in the cartoons!

                      The chute is really easy to clean with my "Conical Grinder Dosing, Cleaning and Portafilter Distribution Tool" - no retention to speak of afterwards.

                          Hah-ha...

                          Love that specialised tool Matt...
                          I just use a cheap artist's brush with the tip bent at a slight angle; maybe 10-15Deg.
                          Works well too...

                            I went to buy a Robur E on Gumtree last week and ended up buying it and another grinder that came with it- an Anfim Super Caimano Barista S450. I've been running both of them side by side all this week and have been very impressed by the Anfim. Too early to make a firm conclusion but it is looking like I may prefer the Caimano over the Robur. Syrupy gloopy treacle-like shots time after time after time with a full flavour spectrum mcluding the bass notes.

                            Back to the grind.....
