  • Breville BCG600 is Choking.

Have had this grinder for about 18 months (so is out of warranty) and it has been a great grinder with no problems until now.

All of a sudden it has started clumping (worse than "normal") and has started choking. I can usually get it going by switching off at the wall which resets it.

I have tried cleaning it by removing the hopper and top burr and then tipping it upside down and getting in with a toothpick and brush to clear the accumulation of coffee grounds around the bottom burr, but it seems to clog up fairly quickly after doing this.

Is the problem the expeller wheel under the burr. Does anyone know if replacing this with a new one will fix it for another year or two? Clutching at straws, because I can't see how it can wear out, though.

Any other ideas or insight would be appreciated.

BTW, did do some searching but didn't turn up anything helpful this.

Today I decided to remove the bottom burr and cleaned it out further. A lot of coffee grounds in there. I removed the expeller wheel and it looks like a couple of the fingers have worn. Not sure how that could happen as there doesn't seem to be anything that it could contact them to wear them down.

I called Breville to see if I could buy a new expeller wheel, but they wouldn't sell me a new one, preferring that I take it to their approved service agent. So, went down there to get a quote, will see if they agree with my assessment.

It's a very common failure. There is some information in the BCG800 and BCG820 threads regarding the problem.

Breville don't sell the replacement sweeper so the service agent won't be able to do anything. Breville don't actually sell any internal parts for their grinders at all.

You can purchase a replacement sweeper online, there's a 3D printing company, Shapeways, in the USA who prints them. I've installed several of them in the past with success, they fit properly and restored full operation to the grinder.

Just go to shapeways.com and search for BCG800 and you'll be able to find the part.
