  • EM0480 vs BCG600 vs Baratza Sette 270.

    Hi everyone,

Depending on the thread I read in these forums, the SunBeam 0480 and Breville BCG600 are either really good or really bad depending on peoples anecdotal experience (mostly good on here). And the Baratza Sette 270 has the same functions, nothing more, nothing less, but is good and most certaily not "or bad".

It just all sounds too anecdotal to me, and I'm having trouble figuring out if something more than twice the RRP (AUD$470) is worth the cost. Or if I should be looking to other models for around AUD$200?

For context, I've just purchased a Hario Cold Brew Bottle which requires a thick grind. So if I want anything other than this type of coffee, I need a different grind type. Considering I get most of my coffee at work, I need a grinder at home. Immediately it needs to be able to handle a thick grind for coldbrew, but I also plan to get a < AUD$2,000 espresso machine. So I need a grinder able to do thick grinds for summer coldbrew, and thin grinds for immediate espressos. Both reliably without shim exchanges.

From what I've read, the grinder is more important than most give credit, thus this thread. SunBeam 0480, Breville BCG600, jumping to Baratza Sette 270 or other. Guide me.

Slight context. I'm only considering espresso machines that do pre-infusions because the difference that makes on the work Saeco Idea Coffee machine is what makes or breakes a coffee from it in my humble non-pro experience. But I also intend to use cold-brew kits over the Australian Spring/Summer/Autumn. These often require medium or thick grinds for a 3-12 hour brew, so I'll need something that can do those reliably and consistently, while also going thin grind without question when I quicky want a cappuccino.

I've owned both the Sunbeam EM0480 and (briefly) Breville BCG600; neither impressed me TBH and I'd say a $2000 machine would be wasted paired with either. The Baratza is a bit of a gamble as a newish product that's had some teething problems, but one worth taking if those are your only options imo.
All indications are the Sette leaves the others for dead for grind quality and consistency.

Another option would be starting with a quality hand grinder (Comandante, Lido etc). This will give you excellent grind quality, zero retention and ease of changing between settings, and much better bang for buck than any of the appliance brand, powered grinders. Add a dedicated espresso grinder down the track when you can afford/justify it 😉

I have used the Breville smart grinder with a Faema E98 A1 for a couple of years and it gave good results. Tends to clump on fine settings and can struggle to grind light roasts. Still have it and use for courser grind brews. It trumps the sunbeam for features and cleanliness.

The sette is a step beyond in grind quality and by the feel of it, build quality too. The grind is very fluffy and it's very fast, the dosing feature is great too.

        Cheers
