  • Grinder Tray

    Here's my new grinds catcher.

It is actually a beer drip tray I found on Fleabay measuring 30 x 17cm

I was less than impressed by the plastic tray which comes with the ECM grinder ( pictured in the foreground ) as being too elcheapo for my setup.

Even better would be a highly polished Stainless Steel unit with finer mesh. It would be a good idea as a premium coffee accessory.

      Tampit,

A question for you. Is there any difference between Mahlkonig Vario and the Barataza Vario. I believe it's a branding thing for Europe, however, I wondered if there were any subtle differences between the two. Thanks.

Volume dosing and a "coffe catcha" type device means i never spill any grounds...other than a few on the tamp mat.

nice grinder... but I'm happy with the ECM at 1/3 the cost.

I'd be careful about my spelling of Grind(e)r in any such search.

Partly: All the Mahlkonig Varios (some of all three gens) I know have been made by Ditting in Switzerland. One eastern seaboard friend reckons his Baratza Vario is made in Germany. The only time I held both gen2's (now gen3 is the current one) there were a few minor differences other than the badge, but somehow the Mahlkonig was a hundred or so grams heavier after all accessories were removed. Short of pulling it apart, no idea where how the Baratza went on a little diet. They sounded the same, similar particle spread. Just maybe the Mahlkonig had a heavier frame (by eye it looked a tad more substantial).

My understanding is that Mahlkonig (i.e. the actual maker of both) have the "rest of world rights" whilst Baratza (i.e. the original "gen1" designer, although the gen2 is a Ditting commercial module under the bonnet nowadays) is USA (and perhaps Canada?). That means Baratza in Oz must be a parallel import, with all the warranty stuff that implies.

                        Hope this helps.

FWIW, I "sort of scored" a third Vario. One of my three now has the optional ($30) steel burrs and is brilliant for coarser grinds ("stirrer plunger and cold drip / steep) with a drop in the espresso quality. That one is now about the same as a Sette for espresso. The other two have the ceramic burrs which do outstanding Turkish to espresso. Other than the huge commercial Dittings (the auger type) the Vario is the only electric grinder I have used that can do Turkish as well as my antique Turkish hand grinder (at about 1/10th the time and 1/100th the effort).

How does this go with noise? Is it any louder or more vibration sitting on this tray? I have some Dynamat left from when I insulated my machine, thinking using some underneath the tray and grinder to help dampen some of the noise?

                          thoughts?
