Re: Yet, Another Help me with a Grinder Thread.
Im sure someone will figure a way to use a drill to adjust the worm gear. Well see youtube videos of it, and well all be Iberital converts.
So it shall be written, so it shall be done.

Re: Yet, Another Help me with a Grinder Thread.
In defence of the Iberital, it IS noisy, but so is my manual Trespade grinder! But I wouldnt describe it is high-pitched.
Any process that involves crunching through brittle beans is going to be noisy. Especially with a motorised reduction drive.
As I have oft said, its good feature of a stepless adjustment, is also its most frustrating.... and Im sure one day will lead me to upgrade for that and no other reason.

Re: Yet, Another Help me with a Grinder Thread.
Gday Armers,
For your budget, it would be pretty difficult to argue past a Rocky D/L. I owned one for several years and found it to be a great little grinder to use, very quiet unloaded, reasonably fast for a domestic unit and capable of producing very consistent grind quality from Turkish all the way through to Percolator. Some people have commented on the effect on the grind moving from one step change to another, but for me it was never really an issue.... Just got used to adjusting the dosing slightly if needed but mostly this isnt necessary anyway.
Dont have any experience with the new Ascaso D/L but it looks to be a real beauty after reading Lucas review of one. Its a little dearer than the Rocky but comes with infinity grind adjustment that is ideal for dialing in the perfect espresso every time. I guess the best way to help you decide, is if you can head over to one of our sponsors premises and have a bit of a play with the various grinders available and then go from there. Nothing like hands-on experience to nudge you towards the unit that will suit you best.
Cheers,
Mal.

There is no such thing as a quiet grinder (unless you are talking about one without any beans)
Errr yeah thats what i ment, i dont want annoying! heh sorry. Just from the reviews i read the iberital has some high pitched noises, which could be annoying. Then again, as greg says, how many shots will i be grinding with it so yeah... Maybe i just get the best i can get for that price point and not stress to much about the noise... arrrggg who knows
See this is why i am talking to you guys, bounce ideas around.

Armers...

They are all noisy, my La Cimbali Jnr included. Grinding is a noisy process.... The major difference is the pitch of the noise produced..... and the faster revving grinders with smaller burrs seem to make a higher pitched (possibly more annoying) noise - and they make it for longer as they grind appreciably slower than their bigger cousins.
Also the larger, more heavily built grinders muffle the high pitched noise more.......
But every grinder Ive ever used will stop any conversation in the vicinity instantly :

Re: Yet, Another Help me with a Grinder Thread.
Thanks for the responses guys,
I think one of the major things i am not going to be happy with at this point in time it too loud!! As i am an early riser with work (0530) I dont want to be waking the rest of the house... So i am sorry to say the iberital is outta the barrel.
Just wanting to make sure with going a rocky / Ascaso i am not making a stupid mistake. I know i cant ask you guys to choose for me as all machines grinders humans are different and there are waaaay to many variables to deal with, i just dont want to screw myself over and buy another on within 2/3 months.
Might need to keep reading for a bit more... But keep the response comming, as you all rock with info!

Re: Yet, Another Help me with a Grinder Thread.
I use the Iberital with my Gaggia and its fantastic. Grind adjustment is infinite which is what you really need as a minimum for espresso.
It is loud, but at that price point youre not going to get everything. Try it out against other grinders and see how it fares in terms of how loud it is. That way you can satisfy yourself and then come to your own conclusion about it.
Bang for buck it cant be beat. Not buying it because it is loud is not a good reason to pass up this grinder.

Re: Yet, Another Help me with a Grinder Thread.
Hi Armers,
Welcome to the looooong road!
You can get some reasonable grinders at $400 as far as grind quality goes but there will be some compromises, and noise output is normally one of them. The Iberital Challenge, from all reports, is good value for the money but I cant comment on the noise factor. My first grinder was a Lux built into the machine I first had and I was happy with the results from that, but it was fairly noise. Think though how many cups youre going to be making @ 30 seconds per double shot. Grinders can always be upgraded later but get the best you can afford, and as far as cup results go the Challenge sounds to be in your range. But Im sure Chris, Attilio, Di Bartoli and some others can suggest something else. The Rocky may just be within reach if you can go a bit past $400.
Unless youre prepared to spend upwards of $600 youre probably going to have to make some compromises (and even at $2500 there are compromises, but I mean the compromises most home users would consider). Second hand of course you could get something reasonable if youre prepared to take second hand units, which if well built and well maintained would be my choice over a cheaper new one.

Re: Yet, Another Help me with a Grinder Thread.
My pleasure Armers, glad youre happy with the machine....Told you that you needed a grinder :POriginally posted by Armers link=1184673097/0#0 date=1184673097*Finaly peels himself away from his Silvia*
<snip>
Ultimately i am looking for some help pairing a grinder with my silvia..... After looking around from what ive read i seem to be pretty happy with the Ascaso I2 Conical. But then again i like the look of the rocky but here there are some issues with it with the silvia and not getting the right grind out of it... The Iberital Challenger is a no no for me as its (from what i read) too loud...
I am not sure what else is in that price range, am i asking to much for my price? I just dont know what to think, i mean i want to spend enought to keep me happy but dont want to spend to much and regret it later on.
So any help would be wonderful!
Cheers

Absolutely on the Ascaso or the Rocky. The Ascaso may come in a tad more expensive than the Rocky but if you decide on a Rocky, you are on budget... Get that grinder sooner than later

Ok hey all,
First of all thanks Chris from Talk Coffee who got me an awesome machine, very very happy with it looking sexy on the bench in the kitchen over there... Now since i got the machine (picked it up like 3pm today) the only access to coffee i had was bought from my bean guy who ground it to "espresso machine" for me... Thought this would be cool and should be good, so turned the machine on got some water in it heated up so on and so forth... coffee in, tamped it (go the little shitty plastic tamp)... Results: LONG shot minimal head and more water then coffee, very watery, 25sec filled the 8oz glass
Sad way to finish the day, so it now looks like i am going to have to get my grinder earlier then i thought. So reading through this site i am confuzzeled, dont know what i want, so many different recommendations, basicly i know the general rule of thumb is buy the best you can afford.. Now realy how true is that? Seriously... Can i get a nice 400ish grinder and be happy with it?¿
