  • Recommended budget coffee grinder

    Hi All.
I'm looking for a good coffee grinder that is great for espresso and all the way to French press.
Also, great with consistency across the grinding range. I read some mixed reviews on the Breville smart grinder pro, so I'm not sure about this grinder.

I read that it's not good for French press. My budget is up to $250 AUD.
Currently, I can get the Breville Smart Grinder Pro for $160 AUD, while usually, it retails for ~$275 AUD. Is there anything that can fit in this price, which is better than the Breville grinder and is good for espresso and French press?

At home I have an Aldi Sterling (2018 model) grinder

Should I go for this Breville grinder or should I look for something else? I wish I could find a refurbished Baratza Virtouso for that price.

My main uses are espresso and other pour-over coffees.

    Thanks!

the baratza encore is a good all-rounder at that price. the steps may be a liiitle too big for fine espresso adjustment, so you might have to pick the closest grind and adjust your dose slightly.

other than that, most supra-$200 hand grinders will do the trick....lido 2 or 3 are excellent, as well as the commandante mkiii. but in terms of machines, the only ones that do both espresso and filter exceptionally well are the deli batch grinders (ditting/ek43). the vario is also good for something sub-$1000, but people seem to make negative comments on its durability.

    edit:

alternatively, if you're happy with your current machine for espresso, get a hand grinder and use it for your pour overs. hand-grinding is a lot quicker and easier for filter than it is for espresso.

Have a look and keep an eye on the Hardware for sale section on this forum... For instance...There was a Macap M2M for sale in Brisbane for around $350.00, it sold for around $300.00 3 days ago...Not sure how convenient they are at changing between espresso and french press grind... I use a cheaper hand grinder for my "coarser" grinding which is minimal.

      Cheers.

well, is the Breville smart grinder pro that bad for french press? I did read that for espresso it's quite good, surprisingly good. For the price of $160 for the Breville, would you still suggest looking elsewhere?

A Smart grinder is a good entry level grinder and $160 is a very good price. It will do the job for French press.
