  • Name that Mazzer!

Just picked up this Mazzer, with no hopper, and I'm trying to identify it. Looks kinda like a Major E, but there's no ID plate, and I can't seem to find a serial number.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Looks too tall to be a Major but I can't see the burrs. Check if the burrs are conical or flat - I suspect it will have conical burrs, which will make it a Robur Auto.

Awesome, thanks mate! Look conical to me

I'd not seen flats before. Interesting.
Found this in council cleanup! Pressed the hopper safety switch and the motor runs. Beauty! Now to find a hopper.

          Robur for sure.

That is definitely a Mazzer Robur
And a newer model with that auger on the lower burr ( this helps feed the beans to be ground by the burrs )

Awesome, thanks all for the help! Knew I'd seen 2 of them in my local cafe, but never knew what model it was.

Any idea where I'm likely to pick up a hopper assembly? I'd be so happy with a second hand one.

You will be able to get a hopper brand new from CafeSpares. But it won't be as cheap as a second hand one.

For what it is worth, I prefer single dosing into my super jolly - just weigh out exactly what you need and then dose straight into the burr assembly. I use a small plastic container to stop wayward beans flying out everywhere but I have seen people also use spare baskets.

Cheers! As in, bypass the hopper safety switch, and modify some sort of container to serve the same purpose as the hopper?

I don't know if there is a safety switch on the Major/auto models of Mazzers. But more generally weight out my exact dose 16.2g and then tip that into the throat of the burrs and then place a basket over the top so beans don't go flying when they grind - probably less so for conicals than flat burr grinders like the Super Jolly.

You can see sitting directly on top of the grinder where the hopper would normally sit is a small plastic container. I take that off - dose my beans into that on the scale and tip the beans into the grinder, then replace the plastic container and grind away.

Fantastic thanks! Yep there's a safety switch which is activated by a tab on the hopper mount. I'll see what ingenious thing I can come up with to activate it safely. There's no lack of performance from 1 dose only in the grinder? I heard a mate say years ago that he always put more than necessary in the hopper to push the beans down in to the burrs. I suppose it might take a tiny bit longer, as they bounce around, but the burrs clearance is still fixed.

Yes, you do lose some performance - but if it's just for a domestic setting then I wouldn't worry. The pressure from beans in the hopper makes the grind faster but an extra 10 seconds when you are only making 1 or 2 coffees really is nothing. 100 + an hour coffees at a busy cafe would be a pain.

It’s pretty easy to re-wire this beast to exclude the hopper safety interlock switch, a google search will pull up pics and wiring diagrams that are really simple to follow. Nice find BTW!
