  • Advice on second grinder

    Hi all.

I currently have a BES920 and smart grinder pro and am looking to upgrade the grinder. (Eventually I want to replace the 920 with and ECM synchronika, but that will have to wait until next year. )
I bought this pair to just get my feet wet so to speak. However I'm hooked and am looking to get something a little nicer.

We make 4-6 coffees a day, pretty much all latte. But I figure I should still have the best grinder I can afford. Budget is $1500 max.

I'd like something that I won't want or need to upgrade again. Something that is relatively quiet and quick as well, and no higher than about 450mm. I don't want it to be too overpowering in the kitchen.
I'm also not great on maintenance, so the easier to clean/take apart the better too. (lazy)

    So on to my list.

    1. Ceado E37S Love pretty much everything about this grinder, apart from the tall hopper, which can be replaced, and the price.
    2. Eureka Atom. This would seem to suit also, well priced.
    3. Mazzer Mini Electronic
    4. ?

I'd really love the Ceado, however it seems it is only available in one place in Australia and therefore not much reason to give any discount.

I'm also located in country SA, so happy to buy from anywhere really. It would have to be posted regardless.

    Thoughts and opinions ?

    Thanks
    Jamie

Spot on. In my view, the sweet spot in your budget is the 64mm class.

Look at the ECM S64, Profitec T64 and the Rocket Fausto.

Fantastic bulletproof grinders that will serve you for many years.

Whole Latte Love do a side-by-side comparison of the Ceado and Atom. Have you seen it? They find it difficult to separate the two, the Atom is on my wish list. They’re both easy to clean and your grind settings are retained when taking the top burr off for cleaning. Both will pair nicely with the ECM.

Did you want a doser? If not the very quiet Atom and put the rest toward a machine. Otherwise what herzog said. There's some good reviews on Seattle coffee gear.

Hi Jamie, are you sure the Ceado is sold in Australia? Or Is it just one of those overseas sites with names like Cafe Italia Australia? Might be worth checking.

I guarantee you Cafe Italia Australia is not in Australia. Bordering on illegal advertising the way they work.

There prices do not include GST, although they say they do.

When you buy from them you will be charged GST and an $80 government import fee. By then its too late when the goods are sitting in Australian Customs.

Wilson, if you do want an Atom and are ready now send me a PM and we will gladly help a CS member

            cheers

Antony is spot on. Years ago before I knew better I looked at Café Italia Aus for a new Pavoni and rang the 'Oz' number to enquire. After some basic detective work it turned out to be a dude in a piano shop in the Dandenongs who admitted he was paid a token amount to answer 'Café Italia' and to tell people to just order on-line. Caveat emptor..

                Hi herzog,

                Thanks for your reply.

I quite like the ECM S64, but I wonder how it compares noise wise to the others.
I was under the impression the Fausto is made by Eureka for Rocket ?

                Cheers

                  Hi crazyhakins,

Yes, have watched that video. Very nice. However they tested the Ceado E37J not the E37S. I think I'd rather the Atom over the E37J.

The Whole Latte Love guys seem to love the Ceado, and even say in another video the E37S is their all time favourite grinder.

                  Cheers

                    Hi JMcCee,

                    Thanks for your reply.

                    I don't want a doser no.

Yup lots of great reviews and videos out there. Which is great.

                    Cheers

                      Hi 338,

Yup good point! Thanks for pointing this out. Yes it was Cafe Italia Australia.

                      Cheers

Haha, well oddly enough I rang them today also. Took about 4 calls to actually get anyone, and then yes he did tell me to order online.

I run an importing business with an online store, and I really hate seeing this sort of behaviour. Adding to the disappointment, why are there no Ceado dealers in Australia ?? They seem to be great grinders.

                        Cheers

Yes the Fausto is made by Eureka. A great grinder but doesn’t have the silent technology of the Atom

Australia is a small market in the greater scheme of coffee things so I suspect Ceado made a decision not to sell here considering the already plethora of grinder brands available here. Maybe a sponsor might like to put their hand up.

Getting approval to sell an electrical appliance in Australia involves work and cost, may need to change things during manufacture of Australian spec models etc. That hurdle may have made it less appealing given the other grinders already available here to compete with.
