  • From Mazzer Mini E to HG-1 - why?

This is not meant to be an unload on Mazzer Mini E thread. I have owned the Mazzer for 8 reliable years and have managed many great shots from it. Even a few (Too few) sublime shots. I have seen many of these grinders in high volume setting - although the coffee from these places often leaves a lot to be desired (coincidence?). Then why do I feel the need to upgrade to a HG-1?
FWIW. A few annoyances, for me at least (others may see them as endearing quirks or even beneficial in ways that escape me).
    1) The anti static wire grid. This jerry-built after thought of a solution seems to do very little to reduce static but results in a permanent back up of stale grinds.
    2) The large hopper. If it's not kept topped up, the grind sizes are all over the place. This means, with my modest usage, the beans have aged considerably before they reach the burrs.
    3) The grind size adjustment mechanism. An awkward, to & fro, hit & miss affair which bears little relationship to the cryptic markings. Once I fluke a setting, that works, I am loath to move it (or even breathe on it) lest I put it out of kilter and have to repeat the whole dial in rigmarole all over again. As for swapping between different beans - forget about it.

The overwhelmingly positive reviews suggest that the HG-1 will address these issues - and then some. At the very least, if I can't improve my output with the Cremina/HG-1 pairing, I'll know who to blame.

I am not sure what you are trying to achieve with your post... maybe you want positive vibes for an HG One?

The Mini is a good grinder, but it had its time. A commercial grinder scaled down to work in a home, with none of the advantages : features required in a home setting (low retention, easy adjustment, friendly size, easy to clean....)

Are you not happy with the Lido E? Have you seen the Niche Zero?

Very happy with the Lido E. So much so that I've pulled the trigger on, what could be described as, its big brother.
The only reason for my original post was to add to the totality of knowledge within Coffee Snobs. CSs who may be contemplating buying a Mazzer Mini E deserve honest reviews - be they positive or negative. Make of it what you will.
      Ignorance is not bliss. IMHO.

Many people still don't realize it takes all of about $6 and and around 6 seconds to make the MiniE a Zero retention grinder.

What/where is the Anti-Static Wire Grid?

My experiencing is shot quality when modding a grinder as such has not been positive. One needs to grind much finer, and I found the shots were watery and lacked mouthfeel.

            IMHO.

I had a Cremina amongst other machines when I first got the HG one and rest assured the HG far exceeds the ability of a Cremina. The HG is the equivalent of a 2 to 3k plus top-of-the-line electric conical machine so at least you know you're getting the best out of the Crem but I can't help think something like a Niche or Atom would be more than capable.

^^Sorry, that sounded really condescending. The HG-one will pair up just fine with a Cremina plus you should buy whatever grinder you want.

No need for sorrow. Not everyone thinks the Cremina, or HG-1, deserve their cult like reputation and suggestions for alternative grinders, like Niche and Atom, can only help to lessen buyer remorse. However, when I googled some pics of the Niche (as practical as it might be) the saying 'There's no accounting for taste' sprang to mind.

Yep same here. I’m trying my hardest to like the Niche because I like most of what it does I’m just not sure I like ‘it’

I’ll have a Niche delivered to my door hopefully within the next few weeks. I’ll report back. :-)

One grinder I rate a lot is the Kinu M68. Expensive, I know, but tastewise and the easiness of maintenance was on a different league to any other grinder I have or had before (MBK feldgrind, Pro T64 and Eureka Mignon).
