  • Quamar Q50 an upgrade over M2M?

I've currently got a Macap M2M which has been great, but has started to leave me frustrated recently:

    1. I just find it to be a messy grinder - even after buying a dosing collar for my portafilter, there is still grinds that fly around the sides and leave a mess around the grinder.

    2. In trying to hone my shots, I've now commonly found that what I think would be the ideal grind size is inbetween two set points. So far I have been compensating by adjusting dose etc, but ideally I'd like to dose consistently and dial the grinder in accordingly.

I'd like to get something that doses directly down into the portafilter and has micrometric adjustment.

First thought was a Mazzer Mini, but I have since come across the Quamar range in my research, but don't know too much about them.

The Quamars can be good, but if you look through some of their threads on here more than a couple of people have had duds straight out of the box in terms of grind quality. Seems their quality control isn't always up to scratch. There are plenty of grinders out there that will do what you want, what's your budget?

Q50 is also stepped grinder with some users reported that the steps are quite big so you might also find the same issue where the sweet spot is in between 2 step settings.
Maybe something else with similar budget? Check other threads in the Grinder section you'll find people recommend Eureka Atom, Macap M4, Compak etc. in addition to the Mazzer Mini which is notorious for its slow grind speed

I think there is a new M2M that is micro metric rather than stepped as well if you wanted a small upgrade.

I’ve never owned a quandary but after reading about them I’d stick with a better known brand to be honest.

Maybe try the quote form from the forum to get in touch with all sponsors and see what’s out there.

The Eureka Mignon is also micrometric and cheaper than the Atom. The new Silenzio models adopt some of the same tech as the Atom.

Budget is around $800, could stretch a bit more if needed.

I had seen the micro-metric version of the M2M online, but haven't seen it yet on the Aussie market?

Seems like there are a few options around, so will start to do some research.

                  That’s a fairly healthy budget.

I’ve also done a lot of research in this area recently as well. I kept coming back to the Eureka grinders. I also got some good advice to look at 2nd hand options as well, as grinders tend to prove themselves to either be reliable or not, and a reliable one will last.

The Mahlkoenig Vario does have steps but they're absolutely tiny.

The Eureka Mignon Silenzio has the same quiet tech as the Atom at a lower price point.

The Eureka Mignon Specialita similar to above but with electronic timer

For your budget I would consider the Macap M4D.

I’m an Atom fan and it looks like the new Mignon (basically Atom mini) will be in your budget so that’s where I would head if I where in your shoes [emoji149]
                        GR

I'm with Grillsy. The Silenzio looks very enticing.

Guys, I’m shopping around for a machine and grinder combo at the moment, I’m just curious a lot of places including This forums sponsors have recommended the Quamar 50s, yet it doesn’t seem to have very good wraps on here and i can’t find much in the way of reviews except for the m80, does anyone have any first hand experience with these grinders as I was pretty certain I was going to get given all the recommendations for them I’ve had from suppliers

                              G'day Milkshake!

Yep I bought one secondhand awhile ago, and I found the stepped adjustments to be just too large an increment (this is for espresso grind). BUT I asked around a lot and there were some who said they also found this, but some said they've had no issues at all and found the steps to be ok. Whether there is a disconnect between what people are used to or what people think is a 'small' increment change I'm not sure.

Here is a thread I started awhile ago about my epic 'journey' with it hehe, along with alot of help from CS members.

                              https://coffeesnobs.com.au/grinders/...ot-others.html

But I don't think this is every Quamar Q50P or S, so you may have to look around.

But that being said, I absolutely LOVE everything else about the grinder. It's really a solid build, SO easy to remove the burrs to clean, when you stop the grinder from grinding it stops really quickly (doesn't take 4-5 seconds to stop spinning), easy access to chute to sweep (that being said, the little metal strip in front of the chute exit broke off from constantly bending).

So the only real issue I had was the adjustments being too large, and altering one notch would slow down or quicken the pour far too much. Which you could to some degree overcome with slight dose changes 0.5-1g, but yeah, depends on how people want to use their grinder.

Edit: I still have my Quamar Q50P, and use it for filter grinds, so it's great for that purpose and the stepped adjustments come in handy for that [emoji14]
