Maybe think longer term and buy better than the 0480.
Yeah I agree,
maybe a second hand Rocky would be a better buy, if you cant afford a new one.
A new Rocky would be twice as much as an EMO480 but will work a bit better and definitely last longer, or if you can stretch to a Compak, Macap or Mazzer you would never have to get another one.

Re: Time for a new grinder?
Thanks for the quick responses.
I did manage to find a way to adjust it by removing the bottom cover and adjusting one of the screws, but it appears to be no surprise that this grinder just doesnt cut it if you like drinkable coffee! Even though the grind is now a little finer, its still not as Id like it.
So... the fun begins! Time to start shopping for an upgrade. I like the sound of the EM0480... seems to get pretty good reviews, and good value for money. This time, unlike the last time I bought a grinder, I think Ill do some homework first!
Thanks again!!

Re: Time for a new grinder?
paulstar,
Welcome to CoffeeSnobs....
Well Im not going to say "Dont be stupid".... however
These grinders (I had a KG100 aka Solis 166) are pushing to grind consistently at the end of their range (finest setting) as supplied.
The rotating burr wobbles - quite a bit - and this varies grind size....And for espresso you MUST have not only a fine grind but a UNIFORM one (all particles the same size..... ) and that just isnt going to happen.
There were mods published on the internet to get finer grinds from the KG100.... and to be honest they were a waste of time.... yes, it did grind finer.... but the grains varied from talcum powder to twice the required size.... the resultant coffee grounds were useless...
A quality grinder is FAR more important than the machine... and these grinders just arent near good enough..... You really need to look at something like an Iberital if you want to grind for espresso. Sorry...

Re: Time for a new grinder?
It looks totally different to my KG100, so it may be a different burr set.
If its on the finest setting & its definitely not fine enough (ie its not your technique), then you might be able to take it apart & re-set the burrs closer together.
Youre right, the easy answer is "go and buy a proper grinder"
The Sunbeam EM0480 or Iberital Challenge or Gaggia MDF are good starting points...
EDIT: Have a look at Alan Frews grinder page here: http://www.coffeeco.com.au/articles/september2002.html
(Mods please remove if this is against the posting rules)

Time for a new grinder?
Hi
I have a Delonghi KG59 grinder. My problem is that even on the finest setting, I find the grind far too course to make a decent espresso coffee. I tried beans coffee ground on a different grinder in my coffee machine, and the difference was enormous, so it is definitely the fault of the grinder.
Sure... you do get what you pay for, and this was not an expensive grinder however, does any one know of any tips or tricks that I can use to adjust the grinder so it will grind a little finer?
I suspect the answer will be, "Dont be stupid... go and by a proper grinder!!", but hey, it cant hurt to ask!
Many thanks for the help!Tags: None
