    Very cool Greg. That will do the trick.

    Thanks folks for the responses ... After more research and chatting with Justin from Alternative Brewing I have decided to go with a Baratza Encore. It won't have the longevity or the range of grind capabilities of a Rocky. Nor will it have the espresso finesse or ground breaking design of the Sette 270. But the Encore is apparently able to deliver decent grind output in the range suitable for my most important needs ... Aeropress, pour-over and French Press. And at better than half the price of the other two I'll give it a try. Surely it can't be any worse than my current worn out EMO480 that delivers fine sand at the coarsest setting and nothing but noise and thin air at the other extreme :-)

    The "Stepless" mod' for the Rocky is simple enough to do and effective. Lots of info to be found on CS via a search...

    Yes the Rocky is a great little grinder, had one (Doserless) for several years and never found fault with it really. It is built to a rugged standard of manufacture and properly looked after, will last a lifetime. Replacement burr-sets are easy to get hold of, bearings are of standard spec's easily obtained (maybe after 10-15 years of use ) and it is easy to tear down for cleaning/overhaul when ever that is needed.

    While the Sette hasn't been around as long, Baratza do seem to have taken constructive criticism on board and made improvements since the original unit came out a few years ago. Best bet would be to try and gain access to the Sette and others at one of our Site Sponsors premises, to be sure you end up with the grinder that ticks the most boxes for you...

    I have read somewhere about a stepless mod for the Rocky but I’m not sure if it’s simple or tricky. If it’s simple maybe you could give that a try.

    Thanks Mal ... checking out David's blog now.
    Thanks WEBN ... I have filled out a quote form.
    Also ... I've been watching/reading reviews and there doesn't seem to be consensus on whether or not the Sette will grind coarse enough for French Press ... thoughts?

    Can't comment on the Sette but I have had a Rocky and they are built like a tank. Last for ages and parts are readily available. Stepped adjustments are a bit of a pain, particularly for espresso. Retention is a little bit too high. Rocky doesn't have the hopper lock - but not a problem if you pre-weigh the dose. Easy to remove portafilter holder. Can be a tad messy, but no more so than a mazzer mini or comparable size/category grinder. Foot print is pretty small but the thing is heavy and well built. At $450 your options will be a little bit limited - you can also try a quote form at the bottom of the page and see if any site sponsors can help you out. They may have some ex demo grinders in and around that price range.

    started a topic Which grinder with max budget $450

    Which grinder with max budget $450

    Hi all ...
    I'm researching grinders and have a maximum budget of $450. I would prefer to purchase new not second hand. I use Aeropress, pour over, oven top espresso and French Press. I also have access to my son's espresso machine so a good fine grind capability would be useful although not absolutely essential. My current grinder is a Sunbeam EMO480 which has served well over 10 years but is now worn out.

    Criteria:
    * I have been manually weighing doses and would be happy to continue doing so.
    * Minimal retention
    * Compact bench-top footprint
    * A broad grind spectrum (fine to coarse)
    * Hopper outlet lock so it can be removed with beans insitu
    * The option to remove portafilter holder so that a variety of containers can be put
    into position to catch grinds

    The Baratza Sette 270 and Rancilio Rocky are in my price range so I would appreciate any feedback/experiences regarding those. I'm open to any other suggestions or ideas.
