    I too have had the exact issue with the Smart Grinder Pro BCG820 and the grinder on the Oracle. And it's not a "bean" problem.
    In Australia and NZ the grinder has a two year replacement warranty. You should also be able to push back on Breville if they're being difficult and tell them that consumer laws allow for longer "statutory consumer guarantees", than specified by the manufacturer warranty.
    These consumer guarantees mean that a product should last an acceptable period of time and if your grinder isn't working after three years and only puts a 1kg a month through it (eg. 150kg after three years), Breville should probably still be required to repair or replace it. You might have to push the point, but they should come to the party.

    I'm also having a similar problem except mine only last for 1 year, called up breville support to see if this is covered under warranty and apparently if the grinder doesn't go fine enough then it's the coffee bean problem (ignoring the fact that this has been working fine for the same brand of coffee bean for the past year and the same beans also work on breville bes870 with the built-in grinder), so the conclusion that i got from the support: this is not a manufacturing fault and they recommend to use freshly roasted beans. so i guess what you pay is what you get. it's time to upgrade to profitec T64.

    If you can get them for a BCG820. There are no parts listed for that model in Oz, and the outer burr only is just available for the BCG820BSS variant. Not sure but I think the BSS bit makes reference to the finish/colour (Black/Stainless Steel maybe??? like SIL is Silver body). You would need someone to confirm that, though.

    If you have ever removed the outer burr for cleaning, then yes, you can change it yourself.

    Can one of our tech members maybe confirm which burr sets are interchangeable between models?

    Oops my bad, for some reason I was thinking that the Pro model hadn't come out until after I had bought my machine, clearly I had the models mixed up.

    So basically to replace both burrs I'm looking at around $100 (thanks for the prices @HomeBrew) and I can do it myself? Is there a better new grinder that can be bought for under $300 or am I better off to replace the burrs and stick with what I've got?

    It looks like the Outer Burr Assembly for the BCG800 is NLA from the spares dept of the large warehouse. It is showing as available on demand for NZ$60.95 from need a part here in NZ. For some reason Breville don't seem to sell the inner burr for the BCG800.

    They are both available for the BSG600SIL from need a part:
    • Breville Coffee Grinder Inner Burr Assy - BCG600SIL/(Part ref 09) NZ$39.95;
    • Breville Coffee Grinder Outer Burr Assy - BCG600SIL/(Part ref 08) NZ$43.95;

    They are both available for the BSG600 from the large warehouse spares:
    • Breville Coffee Grinder Inner Burr Assy - BCG600/(Part ref 09) AU$59.40;
    • Breville Coffee Grinder Outer Burr Assy - BCG600/(Part ref 08) AU$65.45;

    but not too sure if they fit the 800.

    If you were only changing the outer burr, it should take you all 30 secs to change it, so not sure why you would pay someone to do it for you. Having said that, I'm not sure if I'd only change the outer burr without also changing the inner burr (which again would only take all of 5 min to change).

    HTH.

    Firstly, what sort of machine do you have? Does it have a pressurised portafilter, if so, the grind size will have little effect on the pour time.

    Check that the burrs are seated correctly. When you re-assemble the burr set, there are alignment marks where you put the top burr back in, then twist to lock.
    Change the burr adjustment finer only when the grinder is going. Grind some coffee, keep a sample pile and then adjust it finer. Take a small sample at each grind setting and line them up. If you can't see any difference between the coarsest and finest setting, there could be something wrong with your burr alignment, or the burrs could be blunt.
    I have a Breville Dual Boiler with pressureless basket, when the grinder was working properly I could observe large variations in the pour timings depending on the beans and the grinder settings. Everything is lined up correctly, that is all the alignment marks are perfectly opposite each other and it seems to click into place correctly.

    I haven't heard before to change the adjustment when the grinder is going, I'll give that a try. As I said before I have also adjusted the setting that is on the top burr to the lowest possible setting, that is 1, after I did that the grinding sounded like it was labouring a little which I thought might be a positive sign that it was working harder but the pour was still very quick.

    How much does a new top burr cost? If I'm looking at $100 or more including labour I would rather put that towards a new machine. Although I would have thought the machine has not had enough use to blunt the burr.

    started a topic breville BCG800 no longer grinds fine enough

    breville BCG800 no longer grinds fine enough

    I've had a smart grinder for just over 3 years now, never had a problem up until about 2 months ago when I noticed the pours were getting quicker from the same grind settings that used to be perfect. Dialing in smaller numbers did not seem to be making any difference so I took the top off and cleaned the top and bottom burrs, as there was quite a bit of grind stuck in there I thought this would make a difference but alas no, still the same result.

    Next I changed the grind setting on the top burr, it was on 6 so I tried 4 but it made no difference, next I went down to 1 and still no difference. Basically I'm getting 18 second pours from 17 seconds of grinding on a grind setting of anywhere from 4-8 (all give the same result) which results in a pretty full double basket but the pressure rarely climbs above 7 bars. Apart from the shortness of the pour you can actually see the grind is not fine enough.

    Although it's 3 years old it's only been an average of 6 or 7 coffees a week so it's not as if its had heavy usage. What does this sound like to people? Should I get the machine serviced, can I do it myself or is not worth the bother and should I buy a new grinder? It doesn't sound to me like shims would make any difference because every adjustment I have made so far has not altered the result in any way, it's as if it will grind any finer due to some physical limitation.
