    @Andy - Cheers!

Hmm... I had a look at the Vario and it looks like it might require more than just some inner and outer diameter measurements, due to the twist lock.

Love your work on this. The seesaw action is way cooler than a flat slide too.

Nearly makes me want to buy an Iberital Challenge to try it out.

Great use of technology, thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I need to do something similar for my new Vario: the lack of a bean shutter is a stupid oversight IMO.

I had been looking at ways of adapting the hopper from the Baratza Sette which died prematurely but the idea of an adapter with shutter incorporated is much better.

Mini Review of the Iberital Challenge Coffee Grinder:
After about 6 months of use...

    GOOD: :-)
    • Cheap!
    • Excellent precise fine stepless grind control
    • Good solid grinding mechanism
    • Hard steel conical grinding burrs
    • Reasonably good consistency of grind size
    • Not too noisy, but far from silent... but quieter than Breville SGP
    • No doser configuration available

    BAD :-|
    • Not impossible to clean inside, but far from convenient.
    • Some of the plastics are brittle and prone to crazing or cracking on some I've seen.
    • Grinds are a little clumpy, not terrible, but not very fluffy (SGP is better)
    • Poor grind evacuation (might have to try some kind of tape mod to help wipe them out)
    • Average/poor grind distribution
    • Ridiculous plastic porterfilter holder, I just hold the PF manually to get the grinds to go where I want
    • Grind fine-ness sticker on hopper is 100% completely useless... hopper can spin during grinding, and no marking on grinder body so useless as reference point....
    • Clumping means that grind evacuation is very random... so adding a timer for dosing would be useless.
    • Messy: tapping the machine after grinding is finished will result in some grinds spilling all over your bench

    UGLY :-(
    • LOTS of grind retention = wasted beans purging ... not good for an infrequent coffee drinker like me...
    • No chute stopper (well.. mostly fixed that one)

    SUMMARY:
I'd give it a 5/10... but when you pay $150 or less second hand, what do you expect!

I'm looking around, but I don't know what else I could get that would be better, that is not 3x the price... I tried the SGP, and I really wanted to love it, but the grind control was just not fine enough for espresso! I definitely welcome suggestions for other options, or messages from those who have upgraded and want to sell!

DIY Bean Hopper Shutter for Iberital Challenge Grinder

I have an Iberital Challenge Grinder, and it does a reasonably good job of grinding coffee considering it's low price. Good enough that I'm willing to put up with most of its' faults.

Unfortunately, as many will know, beans rapidly become stale when left in the hopper. For this reason, I like to put the beans back in the bag after grinding.

However, because this grinder lacks any kind of valve or shutter on the hopper, this is a difficult and messy process. However I have a 3D printer, so I thought I could print a simple shutter to close off the bottom of the hopper and make emptying the grinder much easier, cleaner and quicker to perform. Here's the results!

Wouldn't be too hard to adapt the design to fit other grinders with a similar limitation... I actually designed a straight-across shutter as well since I initially forgot about the large black plastic moulding around the hopper...
