  • Macap M4D: New Burrs - taking more time to grind

    Hi All,

Recently had my Macap M4D serviced, which required the burrs to be replaced. Finding that grinding coffee is taking an extra 4+ seconds to do the same job. Feel that with new crisp sharp burrs wouldn’t find any drop in performance.

Any advice that could suggest the possible issue or is this as expected with new burrs. Previously had no worries at all, 11.4 to 12.6 seconds for most shots of coffee in a 21g basket. Don’t even remember grinding at 16+ seconds when I originally bought it.

    Incorrect burrs fitted??

    Thanks in advance.

    That’s quite a difference, around 50% slower.

Most obvious reason is if the replacement burrs are less aggressive. You can often get different burr profiles in the same size.

    Cheers

My M4D gives me 17-18g in 8s, probably consistent with your original figures. No change to that in a couple of years, but I’m not a heavy user.

Indeed, it does sound like it, unfortunately...
Might be worth contacting the Macap Importer to find out if Macap have changed the burr profile for the M4D in recent times. Approx. how much coffee have you put through the M4D? One would have to expect that the burrs would easily accommodate 300-400Kg before burr-set replacement was necessary.

Have you noticed a change in pitch of the motor when it's running? Do you think it's struggling to grind since the service was completed?

        Mal.

Think not all Burr sets are made equal. Possibly the new ones that are fitted are not genuine Macap. Ordered genuine burr set from Talk Coffee this morning. Have a feeling that will grind my worries away.

I'd look to returning the set your service provider fitted and request a refund...

              Hi all,

Fitted the genuine Macap burrs and everything is back to how I remember, normal grinding times for the M4D. Highly recommend if you get your grinder serviced, insist on only genuine burrs. I didn’t think I would have to insist on such things but having experienced this lesson I wouldn’t leave it to chance.

In the photo the upper burr is perhaps generic while the lower burr is genuine Macap.

Happy grinding, and many thanks to Talk Coffee for the speedy delivery of the burrs and a bonus bag of coffee

Been following this thread with a degree of interest, didn't chip in as I felt Mal had it pretty well nailed, you obviously also had similar thoughts, which obviously turned out to be correct.

Pleased to hear you got the problem sorted out, thanks for keeping us informed as to the outcome.

One thing to note is that there are two different part numbers- both genuine. The M4 and M4D are different. Possible that an M4 set (which is a less aggressive cut) may have been mistakenly supplied and fitted.

99.9% sure that can’t happen as from memory the screw patten is incompatible, slightly different spacing. As mentioned that is from some time ago as I brought burrs and had to return them as they would not fit.

Thanks for the info. Never tried- but that all makes sense...

Well, this must have been the 0.1%. Burrs on the bottom with coffee grinds on them were the replaced ones (not M4D) that took a lot longer to grind and the ones on top are the genuine M4D burrs that grind wonderfully.

That could be a possibility, Macap burrs were installed but from another model.

I’m thinking about replacing my M4D burrs too, they are three years old. Can I use the M4 burrs from Jet Black Espresso? Where is the best place to get genuine ones?

Currently 21 grams takes about 10 seconds.
