Macap M4D: New Burrs - taking more time to grind

Hi all,

Fitted the genuine Macap burrs and everything is back to how I remember, normal grinding times for the M4D. Highly recommend if you get your grinder serviced, insist on only genuine burrs. I didn’t think I would have to insist on such things but having experienced this lesson I wouldn’t leave it to chance.

In the photo the upper burr is perhaps generic while the lower burr is genuine Macap.

Been following this thread with a degree of interest, didn't chip in as I felt Mal had it pretty well nailed, you obviously also had similar thoughts, which obviously turned out to be correct.

I'd look to returning the set your service provider fitted and request a refund...

Think not all Burr sets are made equal. Possibly the new ones that are fitted are not genuine Macap. Ordered genuine burr set from Talk Coffee this morning. Have a feeling that will grind my worries away.

Indeed, it does sound like it, unfortunately...
Might be worth contacting the Macap Importer to find out if Macap have changed the burr profile for the M4D in recent times. Approx. how much coffee have you put through the M4D? One would have to expect that the burrs would easily accommodate 300-400Kg before burr-set replacement was necessary.

Have you noticed a change in pitch of the motor when it's running? Do you think it's struggling to grind since the service was completed?

My M4D gives me 17-18g in 8s, probably consistent with your original figures. No change to that in a couple of years, but I’m not a heavy user.

That’s quite a difference, around 50% slower.

Most obvious reason is if the replacement burrs are less aggressive. You can often get different burr profiles in the same size.

Hi All,

Recently had my Macap M4D serviced, which required the burrs to be replaced. Finding that grinding coffee is taking an extra 4+ seconds to do the same job. Feel that with new crisp sharp burrs wouldn’t find any drop in performance.

Any advice that could suggest the possible issue or is this as expected with new burrs. Previously had no worries at all, 11.4 to 12.6 seconds for most shots of coffee in a 21g basket. Don’t even remember grinding at 16+ seconds when I originally bought it.

Incorrect burrs fitted??
