  • Quiet home grinder - Eureka Silenzio or...

Tired of killing conversation in my entire open-plan kitchen/living/dining area - is there anything I should consider that's more affordable than the Silenzio?

  • #2
Sadly modern kitchens with all of the hard surfaces bounce noise all over the place (most unpleasant) not a lot you can do about that.

The newer grinders will grind a shot in seconds.

I can still carry on a conversation whilst my Mazzer is running and my hearing ain't that flash.

No solution to your particular problem, just personal observations.

What's the old saying "you cant make an omelette without breaking eggs"

The silenzio is pretty quiet mate. I know two people who have them and are very happy with them. Antony at Casa Espresso may have a demo (may!) If you get in touch with him

Thanks all. One final question - if I took leave of my senses and wanted to take a step up from the Silenzio, I gather the Atom is pretty much the way to go?

I have the specialita and its great. Probably quicker than the silenzio due to the 10% larger burr size, but since I single dose, the grind by time on screen seems to be wasted on me at least for now.
I considered the atom, but it's not as single dosing friendly.

Depends on what you want from it other than a more quiet motor.

"Depends on what you want from it other than a more quiet motor. "

It's not motor noise that's the issue with most grinders, the racket begins when the beans hit the burrs.

I can't say I disagree, however motor in this context at least in my meaning refers to the motorised unit itself which includes the burrs.
A units damping will also be key.

TBH surprised no one has chimed in about a niche yet.

Do you want a quiet grinder or a quieter grinder? There are probably several quieter and cheaper grinders than the Eureka Silenzio.
Perhaps you ought to tell us what your current grinder is so we have a benchmark. What's your budget?

I'm after a quiet grinder, but also an upgrade from my current Sunbeam EM0480. Budget-wise, I'm flexible - ideally I don't want to upgrade again after this, and I don't want to look back and think "I could've spent 10% more and got something way less compromised than this".

I'm in the same boat, so am watching this thread with interest.... looking to upgrade from an old Breville Smart Grinder (old enough to be a collectors item).
What I am really struggling with is the price.... how can a small electric motor with a simple digital timer in a small box with a shaft with burrs attached to it cost as much as my complex Miele washing machine?

Economies of scale, I expect. Pretty much every household has a washing machine, very few have coffee grinders, and fewer still bother with something that approaches the results of commercial grinders.

What machine do you have? Do you have any plans to upgrade it (and I assume you won't want to upgrade the grinder again too)?

Pull the big chunk of concrete out of the washer and what's left would weigh the same as the grinder!
