  • Prosumer grinder for filter

Currently doing my homework for a new grinder purchase in the near future, but in all of my research there doesn't seem to be a lot of reliable info on grinding coarser for filter. We drink MoccaMaster and some aeropress/V60, but my 9-year old Sunbeam EM0450 produces a lot of inconsistency (fines) when trying to grind coarse. I'm also trying to buy a "good" grinder, not a cheap one - hopefully under $1000 though... Most guides on prosumer grinders are aimed at espresso.

My thoughts so far range from Rocky Rancillo and Macap M2M to the Baratza Sette range, although I'd prefer to buy a bulletproof grinder that will go the distance over a "bells and whistles" model. I should be fine without a doser, timer or micro adjustments.

Can anyone who has used a range of mid-level grinders comment on which models produce consistent coarse grinds and tasty filter coffee?

There are plenty of great opportunities for excellent grinders to be had in the 4-Sale section at the moment. The money you save could then be used to grab more wonderful CS Coffee from Andy or our Site Sponsors...

Whilst looking for grinders, I noted that Eureka claim the Atom can do V60, Fench Press etc on their site. Perhaps someone that has one can chime in, but at about $1100 from at least one of the site sponsors, it's justa touch above your budget.

The Atom can do those things, but with its stepless grind adjustment and relatively high retention switching back and forth isn't something you will be able to do in a hurry.

Fair enough, though if one were to stick with just one type of grind (ie - manual brews) it should work out.

What about the single dosing Niche grinder?

Wow. That thing looks amazing! I think though, that if I'm spending $1000.... I want it to do the grinding for me.

That Niche is pretty, and I like the simplicity. Anyone know about particle distribution?

I also grind 42g of beans for the MoccaMaster most mornings. It looks that that would only just fit in the "hopper."

I do leave my hopper empty though, and weigh to grind for each batch.

Theoretically, do I want larger, flatter burrs with lower RPM for quality filter grind?

Which one would you choose for my situation Mal?

Anything from a Rancilio Rocky and up will do what you want...

Have a look at the OE (Orphan Espresso) Apex grinder.

The triangular ghost burr set is claimed to be produced specifically for filter and manual methods and to minimise fines.

You’re right, most of the prosumer grinders are designed for espresso and won’t do a very good job of grinding for filter. In fact many of the appliance brand grinders do a better job as filter grinders. My pick of them would be the Breville Dose Control Pro.

If you want to and can afford to spend more money I’d recommend the following:

                          https://www.jetblackespresso.com.au/...hlkonig-vario/

You’d want to find a retailer that can sell you one with the optional steel burrs though. This is an excellent grinder that can be used for any brew method, but with the steel is optimised for filter coffee.

The other options are the Mazzer Mini Filter model, but personally I don’t think that’d be particularly good value, and the brand new one from Wilfa called The Uniform. I don’t think it’s available on this side of the world yet so you won’t get one with an AUS/NZ plug and local certification, but it does look pretty good and worth investigating.

Thanks Leroy - this is exactly the kind of info I was after. I first read this really detailed review that picked a $125 Bodum Bistro as the winner of blind taste tests over a Breville Smart Grinder pro, which nearly made me get one!

Considering that it's fairly cheap though, I wanted something more robust with longevity.

I'm sold on the Wilfa. Just need to figure out how to get one! That thing is right up my alley. Thank you again for your 2c!
