Not that it matters, but if you were curious, I'm now grinding at 3.3 seconds for a double.
Not only is the grinder fast, it's quiet and the kind of noise it makes is very, very nice, none of that screeching or tearing I get with my cheaper grinders, it's really a beautiful sound if you like products with quality engineering and have experienced the nasty cheap appliance stuff.
Having said that, if the M7D wasn't justifiable as a work purchase, I'd be happy with the Brevile SGP, not far off the taste and ease of use of the M7D (I know, I know, comparing those two is silly).
I have been a longstanding owner of a M7D and have found it to be a very reliable and fast grinder which produces excellent shots. With only 350rpm I am not sure how it grinds so fast. Like you I don't use it as a single doser but rely on a purge.
Just thought I'd update the thread.
I bought the M7D and the Kyro and sold the Kryo to keep the M7D which was quiter (slightly), faster (noticeably) and easier to use. Shots are also slightly more consistent.
The M7D works very well as a single doser but I use it with the hopper and between 100 and 1000 grams in it at a time.
I'll attempt to revisit the thread in a year or so.
From the sounds of it you're doing most of your research online. If at all possible I cannot recommend highly enough to get into a shop and try a few hands on. Different people find different mechanisms and interfaces more natural and intuitive, nicer to use etc. Once something is "good enough" whether or not it's the right one for you comes down to you, not it. The M7D is certainly good enough, I haven't heard of the Kryo before but a cursory search looks ok, Rancilio know what they're doing.
Where are you located? Site sponsors in Sydney and Melbourne are worth a visit, I'm sure there's other site sponsors in other places too.
I can't find much info here (or anywhere really) on these two. I'm also considering a Ceado E37.
Looking to upgrade and I'm turned off the old Mazza because of thread clogging issues.
Anyone have one of the two mentioned?
G'Day Bob, (thread clogging) with Mazzer grinders is not a problem, provided you give them a clean now and again, this includes the thread, after cleaning a light spray with silicone lube and all is fine.
On the other hand if your a set and forget type, over time grot will build up and the adjuster will become difficult to turn, in fact I've heard of some neglected machines where the adjuster has completely seized
Not a lot of love for Mazzer products among home users any more, as a result there are some real bargains to be had.
Admittedly they are not speedsters, but, they are a quality grinder built to last.
On the other hand, check the bench on the majority of cafes, you will usually find Mazzer grinders, wonder why?
Mine is now about 10 years old, used multiple times daily and I wouldn't part with it for quids.
Sorry mate, don't agree with your Barista friend on either of those accounts.
Have been using a Mazzer for the past 8-9 years and neither of those suggestions really hold water, despite what you may have found in the wisdom of the internet crowd.
I guess that if one doesn't properly maintain one's grinder, then regardless of make, you are going to experience difficulties...

Also, Mazzers have a cumbersome grind adjustment, described as 'tight' and 'sticky'? Also found this echoed in a few reviews.
I'm feeling like there's no love here for these two grinders since a search and a new thread have resulted in no fruit.
Well if you search for 'Maccap' instead of 'Macap' that will limit the hit rate for a start. What are you planning to use the grinder for (home, cafe, restaurant)? Most people here will be discussing grinders for home / light commercial use.
