You win something, you lose something.
I was considering Sette but ended up buying different brand because of this reliability "fame".

I suspect Baratza made the product to a price point that was unsustainable. They then tried to rectify recurring issues within the same price structure which was even less sustainable. Had they remanufactured the thing to a more practical retail agenda with sympathetic subsidies to existing customers to upgrade then it would be a different story and a whole new customer base.

I have seen more posts about horror stories from Baratza customers than any other grinder by a long shot. I wouldn’t pay 5 bucks for one

For sure am aware of all the issues with the Sette models, but Baratza have a whole range of grinders, not just the Sette. I was moreso saying that I feel the statement that Baratza just has garbage is a bit much. And also that often only the broken stuff gets put out there to discuss. Even look through the new posts in this forum, alot of forum threads are 'issue with pump, machine, steam, burrs etc/Help!'

The first lots were clearly not great. I'm certainly not in denial and those statistics aren't great for sure. As far as I can tell they've been working crazy hard to rectify those issues. We all make mistakes, but they didn't just dump the customers and run. I respect that.

I suspect Caffeinator is well placed to make an assessment.

They certainly seem to have more than their share of issues, search "baratza sette 270 problems" on YouTube, first to come up is "Sette Motor and Gearbox Replacement"

It's often that people post about their troubles with a grinder (looking for help to fix it), and can be rare for those to purposely bring up positive experiences with it. Hence why I started my thread on mine. I wouldn't think all their stuff is garbage.

HI EL, do you single dose it? could you comment on retention and clumping?
I have M4D but clumps badly.

This is the second issue I've had with mine, had only been using it for 6 weeks when the drive motor shorted & died - was replaced with entire new unit. This time, made my first shot of the day - no problems, an hour or so later came back for refill - same symptoms as yours. Being 18 months old, I contacted the supplier to find out about warranty only to be told 12 months is all they're covered for. I decided that I wasn't going to jump on the
quality/fit for purpose/adequate warranty merry-go-round so I pulled the sucker apart. Discovered that the lower PLASTIC bearing race had broken and being open to the drive gears, dropped the ball bearing into the PLASTIC(Nylon???) gears and rounded all the teeth hence the high pitched noise and no grinding.Think I read on another thread somewhere on here that somebody else had come across the same issue. Hope you have some luck sorting yours but mine has gone in the E-waste and I'm in the market for a Mazzer - no more pussy-footing around.
    Yep, same issue here.

Found out it is around 500 to replace the unit.. totally not worth it. To the bin it goes. Won’t go Baratza again.

I’m in love with the fiorenzato f64 evo gt . Check it out.

Replaced with another 270W. No idea about the newer models, after the last failure I have disregarded Baratza's altogether.

Was it replaced with another 270W or a 270Wi?

I only ask because I was under the impression that the 270Wi have upgraded gearboxes...
