  • Looking for filter grinder (auto)

    Hi all,

I'm looking at purchasing an automatic grinder for filter coffees. I brew v60 mostly and chemex and would like to upgrade from going to my parents place and stealing their grinder.

I was looking at the baratza 270 as well as precision GS1 (although i read that this is not a trusted product yet).

I have ~$500 I'd be happy to spend but if there's one not much more than I'd be willing to consider paying extra for a higher quality product.

Thanks in advanced for your suggestions.

It's not what you're looking for, but I'd expect a Comandante would probably do a better job than most things <$500. It also has the benefit that it's portable. If you need more grind adjustment range, you can buy the spindle with the finer thread pitch for it, too.

Is also look at a hand grinder as I have a Orphan Espresso Lido E (finer thread pitch) that was a 2 22gm espresso a day grinder for almost a year and it wasn’t too bad. It now gets used for Aeropress 15gm dose 2-3 times a week and is quicker and easier then espresso so depends how large and what grind size to how much you’ll care about cranking a hand grinder. Think there is an ex site sponsor that has some on big discount currently.
If you want to go crazy hand grinder for filter brewing check out the Orphan espresso Apex

Thanks for the advice so far. Mainly because I brew for my gf and I'll do 30g to 40g dosage for 2 cups each day

The Baratza Sette 30AP will be a good fit for you. It’ll probably create a bit of static grinding for filter, but other than that it’s probably the best option your price range at the moment.

What would be your recommendation with say $1000 to spend?

I've learned not to trust anything branded Baratza

Mahlkönig Vario with steel burrs would be worth looking at. Ceramic burrs are standard, but if you can find someone that can supply the optional steel burrs it’s an excellent choice. I actually know someone that used to use this particular option in their cafe at times. Otherwise the Wilfa Uniform has been made to do exactly what you’re after, but could be hard to get in this part of the world and is probably a bit more than $1000.

I thought I'd update everyone and advise that I will make the purchase of a commandante c40 mk3. After watching and reading countless reviews this seems to be the appropriate purchase for my needs at this point. Thanks for the help. If anyone has a discount code to share for Alternative brewing or coffee parts. I'd appreciate that

I also rate the Hiku. I have one with TiN burrs as a traveller.

Grind quality is every bit as good as the biggies in conical hand grinders. Love the camera lens finish. The only gotchas I can see is the relatively wide diameter of the unit. It's best suited to bigger hands. I do however prefer the size and finish of the larger and nicer knob on the Comandante handle.

I was hoping a CS member would buy a Hiku at some stage. I’m saving my pennies for one and it’s good to hear that you’re happy with yours. The Commandante, Helor and Lidos probably offer some of the best value for money, but from what I can tell the Hiku (along with maybe the Kinu and Apollo) offers a higher build and grind quality. At a price though obviously.
