Re: EM0480 "Unlock" Button
Ray C has progressed the stepless mod further and more successfully than others, have a good long read through this:
http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1183436456/0#0
It doesnt utilise the Lock button method, however and given its weak spring loading, its probably better find other ways to stabilize the collar as Ray did.
I reckon it is possible though, and was going to try carving a solid rubber copy of the locKing bit, which would "grip" a little better. But whatever method, you still need to grind of the ridges or fill in the troughs.

Re: EM0480 "Unlock" Button
interesting you should mention this. i had done a mod previously to raise the burrs to get a finer grind on mine. recently though ive been playing with the unlock button to allow for a coarser grind. seems to work good enough for plunger grinding
not sure about making it stepless for espresso though... give it a go, you just never know

Re: EM0480 "Unlock" Button
No, it cant be used like that.Originally posted by Laryngoscope link=1186903637/0#0 date=1186903637
I noticed an "unlock" button on a store em0480. Reading the pdf manual this seems to only be used to remove the top burr from the machine.
Could it in theory be used to turn the sunbeam into a step less machine, and thereby addressing one of the common complaints with this grinder? Or is it just too "fiddly" to be practical?
No point going stepless as it doesnt have enough repeatability anyway.

Re: EM0480 "Unlock" Button
I think it is possible to stepless this machine and I nearly did it to mine, luckily fiery took it off me,
the steps are inside that top part under the hopper right close to where the burrs are, youd need to secure a worm drive to the back of it and drill a hole for a screw to "ride the worm" I was toying with the idea of either dremelling the steps out of the way or removing that part that does this. It is possible if youve got the time and inclination, but Id probably just go the challenge, Im pretty sure there are many here who are happy with them..

EM0480 "Unlock" Button
I bought into the free em0480 fathers day deal, but whilst waiting for the grinder to arrive I have been reading about all the *bad* points of this grinder on the forum, and there does some to be a lot of them
So I am thinking about selling the sunbeam when it arrives and perhaps picking up a challenge instead.
