  • Upgraded set up, not sure if I got the right grinder..

Just went from a Breville Barista Express to a Lelit Victoria PL91T and Macap M2D grinder from JetBlack Espresso after reading through lots of forum posts and watching a bunch of YouTube videos. The flavours are instantly much strong and better than the Breville could produce, even on a good day.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to try the grinder as it wasn't on display in the showroom. When I got home I realised it's only got one timed setting and it's restricted to between about 4 and 9 seconds (which isn't enough time to fill the double basket) – and you have to lift the unit up to adjust it with a tiny dial underneath! If I had known that I probably would have gone for the Sette 270W (which was my original plan) or even the Eureka Specialita – as they both have a screen to adjust the time, and also allow for more than one setting so I could measure a single and double dose.

Is it just a case of getting used to it and I'm just being too picky (and inexperienced)? My thoughts were I could try and sell it now while it still has the full warranty etc and get one of the other options. Otherwise I assume the best way to dial it in is for a single shot then just press the button again when I have a double basket? Then just awkwardly adjust the time with the small dial as I change the type of beans?

This is just a guess but I think some timer based grinders like this are designed to time a single shot and that if you click the PF twice against the contact, it will run it twice as long, to get a double shot. So you might want to set the timer to give you half the dose - by weighing each time until you get it right - and then does twice.

I have the Sette 270Wi (270W is obsolete and no longer sold). It is a great grinder and I love the built-in scales but someone will chip in and complain about reliability, due to the W model being a lemon. Jury is still out whether the Wi has completely fixed the issues. But if I were to buy again I'd probably just get the 270 and manually weigh the beans with my cheap 0.01g scales (cost me $20), each time. You save a couple of hundred dollars this way and the actual grind output is the same.

I would get the Mignon Specialita. Lovely, well made, quiet and does single dose nicely if that is what you want.

The Sette is noisy and quality still suspect but does weigh shots which is very nice and the grind quality is excellent.

I have the older M2D and while it was a pain to adjust (took a while especially with the control on the bottom of the grinder) I have it set and just tap the PF twice. Been working like this for over a year without readjusting it. I don’t change beans which is why I haven’t had to adjust it. If you are someone who regularly changes beans you would probably need regular adjustments which would be a PITA in which case I would consider a different grinder

Thanks all, good to know I was drawing accurate conclusions. You are right about feedback on the Sette; Jetblack Espresso suggested I get this instead of the Sette due to reliability. I'll stick with it for a few weeks and see how many times I need to adjust. It is a well built little machine that puts out a nice grind. I just don't know why they would stick a tiny little dial on the bottom of it, completely non-user friendly. If it bugs me too much I'll advertise it for sale and get the Mignon Specialita.. I do change beans every month as like to try different types, as well as alternate decaf. Getting a set of $20 scales is a good idea.

Is the Timer Operation the only mode of operation possible with the M2D?
If a straight Manual operation was possible, you could just use this mode and weigh each charge before grinding...

            Mal.

is there any reason you didn't go with the Lelit Kate (with the inbuilt grinder).
I'm tossing up the same options, in built grinder (Kate), or Victoria with grinder
