  • Troubles with new grinder and fresh beans

Well today I received some freshly roasted beans at last (24/7) and raced home to finally experience the true coffee experience (I have been using supermarket beans for the past couple of months practicing with my new EM6910) After a recent trip to perth (I live 1400ks away) and attending the Sunbeam barista course I was convinced the bean selection was the route of all evil, I have been grinding at around 9 with the supermarket beans (using the double floor basket)and with fresh beans I thought I would start at around 18 and work down, wrong, with the large single floor basket and lightly tamped twice then topped up and final firm tamp to 3mm below the rim the gauge didnt move and the water just poured through. I stopped, reground at 12 and tried again, similar results, I am grinding at around 7 to get a half decent pour. I would have thought with a nearly new grinder 7 would be way too fine, the grinders that I was using at the college that get used to death were still only set at around 12. any suggestions.

If you are using the Sunbeam grinder I usually set mine at about 12 and get a good fine grind for my Rancilio Silvia, this gives a good slow pour with nice golden globs on coffee and crema!
If you are cleaning grinder make sure you click the top burr back in properly otherwise it will give you cracked pepper size coffee!!
    Good luck
    cheers

PS: Take top off grinder, take out burr and lock it back in, it may help.

The buurs are in properly, I just thought a new grinder set at 6-7 would be way too fine with fresh roasted beans,

Mine ran at 5 - 6 at new but as it settled in I had to go lower. Thus you will find any number of posts on EM0480 being too fine or course :-)

As yours is running FINE, I would suggest that you follow any number of posts here and get access to the bottom burr ie. http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1187939008

WARNING: Note the settings and orientation of the top burr carrier etc as stated by many and in the manual.

The bottem burr is held in by a nut that you will have to remove (Note: CW to remove LH Thread

When you remove the bottom burr, you should find at least two spacers :-)

If you can, call Sunbeam before hand and ask for an extra one OR two to be sent before hand :-)

I had some SS spacers at work and they were about = to 3 Sunbeam spacers.

I replaced the two Sunbeam ones with my special and I now do fresh beans (Type dependant) on a setting of between 13 and 15 on the EM0480.

This method also means that I have two extra spaces, should the system bed in any more... However it has been stable for some time now.

        Piece of cake.....

          brett, you said fresh.
          What does (24/7) mean?
Not the roasting date I hope.

Because they are content to drink it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week ... its a great name!

                    its a great coffee too.

i use the same coffee with the same grinder and i started at 6. i pulled the machine apart, cleaned it properly (bought it second hand) and re-assembled it. now im at 8-9 for my silvia. its consistent and im not changing blends every day, iso m happy. if 7 is where youre at, stick with it and enjoy the 24/7
