  • Ibertial vs Rancilio vs Ascaso

    Hey all,

    Sorry in advance; I know there is a million which grinder questions, but here is yet another.... :-[

    Looking for another grinder for my Gaggia classic machine.  Currently I have a lux nemox, which I am relatively happy with, except I cant get quite as fine, nor as adjustable a grind as I would like.  My other half wants another grinder so one can be dedicated to decaf, so I am on the hunt for another grinder, but with a ceiling of around $400 at the most I would say (I think she will have a conniption if I try to spend more).

    What I am looking for is a burr grinder, doserless, and probably with infinite steps, used only for espresso.  However, from researching on this site I think I have found three contenders;
    • Ibertial Challenger
    • Rancilio Rocky
    • Ascaso i2

    I know that the bottom two are over $400, and the rocky isnt stepless, so that leads me to the following questions;
    * are the bottom two worth the extra $$$ over the challenger (i.e. better grind results, longer life span?)
    * is the rocky adjustable enough to get a really good espresso grind?
    * anything else to consider?
    * are there other models I should consider?

    I am happy to spend the extra dollars on a quaility item where you get a noticable improvement, but I dont want to waste dollars either.

    Any comments gladly received.

    Paul

    ps anyone in Brisbane with one of these they wish to part from (or any other quality grinder) please feel free to drop me a line

    Re: Ibertial vs Rancilio vs Ascaso

    In terms of performance, your question is narrowed down to the difference between the rocky and the other two, because internally the other 2 are virtually the same unit.

    Thoughts:
    the ascaso looks the best (for me);
    the rocky is the ugliest for me;
    the rocky is the best grinder performance wise for me. Its quicker, therefore makes less noise - either because it makes less noise, or because it is grinding for less time (much faster delivery than the others);
    the rocky is the heaviest most solid of the three & will probably last the other two out over a long time.
    quality of grind is very similar, all grind coffee well for the type of coffee machines they are pitched at.
    rocky is the easiest / quickest to adjust
    other two are very slow to adjust
    stepped or non stepped adjustment is the subject of endless discussion on the net but ultimately its up to the individual and if they know their stuff well enough, the stepped adjustent on a rocky shouldnt present a problem.

    At RRP the rocky is the dearest, and my opinion is it is the best of the three however it is your opinion that counts when making your purchase.

    Hope this helps.

          Pretty sure this a rebadged Compak K3 Touch, so if you can get a demo of either its the same machine....

              Be grateful for small mercies. There are many here with other halves who have to jump through all sorts of hoops to just get a grinder, let alone a second one, let alone a second one at the other halfs initiative! ;D

                True, but short sharp words were exchanged when I starting talking about the upgraded espresso machine I also wanted to get the other day...

                And I havent really mentioned the tamper yet either.... ;D

                BTW: thanks for all of the replies I got on this. At the end of the day I ended up with an Ascaso I-1, which I got cheak from Di Bartoli (thanks Ofra).
