    hi all

i have an iberital challenge doserless.
i clean the chute with a small thin, bendable bit of metal which works fairly well (but still leaves plenty of old grinds).

on friday, i was doing my usual scrape-out, but got excited and started scraping just before the grinder actually stopped! the scraper was yanked into the machine faster than you can exclaim "holy coffee crap" i thought that i had totally stuffed the machine or at least the conical burr set.

anyhow tonight i managed to manually turn the top burr with a spanner and with a bit of a wiggle, out popped my not-so-straight scraper...

so anxiety has reduced to the status quo (~1/10) and i am VERY excited to grind up some 4 day old St Ali Espresso blend tomorrow morning!!!!

    YAY

Hi roknee - what an awful (but funny) sight that must have been.

Im going to increase your anxiety again and suggest you take a look at the burr set with a magnifying glass - would be surprised if you dont see some indents there :-/ Oh, and just one other suggestion. When you do this, makes sure the thing is unplugged first! :

Im not sure of the Iberital setup but I use an artists brush to clean the Macap chute.
If I ever did the same as you, then only bristles would get chewed.

When I was using the EM0480 I did the same but cut down the handle of the brush to a useful length.

        hey dennis and TG

dennis - it actually was quite funny to see this poor metal scraper poking out of the chute...and i am thinking the same as you that there will be SOME damage somewhere, but looking down into the burr set, i coudlnt even see the scraper, so its going to be lower down.
the challenge looks, well, like a challenge to get into.
i could explore the damage, or i could (and most likely will) pretend like nothing happened "and they all lived happily ever after".

pulled a nice-ish double this am - i did notice a little more clumping (when grinding) than usual, but then theres todays humidity and the fact that i think i created a finer setting when trying to free my scraper. i guess w/o looking, its hard to say how much damage has been done.

TG - i also use a brush to clean the burr set out but the bigger problem is the damn chute. tricky to get a lot of the grinds out.
think ill put forward this question to other challenge users out there..

I think youll be pretty right there roknee,

At the very least, the burrs on the Challenge will be made from High-Speed Tool Steel and this will be MUCH harder and tougher than the misdirected utensil. Pulling it apart and reassembling may create problems that werent there originally :-? so if it was mine, Id leave well enough alone and continue to pull great espresso...... 8-)

          Cheers ,
          Mal.

Id keep working on your technique then roknee , the hardware you own is capable of pulling superb espresso so its a matter of practice, adjustment and then more practice..... Dont know of a quicker way unfortunately. Happy brewing mate ,
