Re: Help! I need a proper grinder!
Gavin
Good advise above as always, I originally had Silvia and a EM0480 and I outgrew the sunbeam in a few short months.
By this I mean, the steps [grind settings] are quite large so I often found myself stuck between a setting that poured too fast and one that poured too slow.
There are startegies you can use to over come these issues, but you sometimes tend to churn through the beans getting a good pour.
If that is what you can afford, it is a good starting point, but a stepless such as the Iberital Challenge or the Ascaso [wold be a better long term choice.
I would certainly recommend you purchase a larger basket: the Silvia double is known as a 12g, whilst most doubles are 14g.
Whilst a 12g can be updosed with up to 18g of coffee and a 14g close to 20g, the extra couple of gs makes a big difference to the quality and ease of repeatability of the pour from a Silvia.
The other recommendation is a good well fitted tamper, [check out Pullman Tampers]
With a Silvia, a good grinder, 14g basket and a great tamper, and some practice, your shots will be sensational.
Good luck on your journey.

Re: Help! I need a proper grinder!
For the price, the Gaggia MDF isnt bad either. There are some on the second hand market as well and they do the job well enough. If only they came with a doserless version...

Re: Help! I need a proper grinder!
If you think the Iberital is bad -- that is always open for debate -- you havent heard anything until you hear the 747 taking off in the form of a Cunill. Im thinking of wearing earplugs to preserve my hearing.

Re: Help! I need a proper grinder!
Hey Gavin and welcome,
I heard the ibertial on the weekend, at a snob meet, for the first time and the sound isnt that bad. Maybe compared to a mazzer etc it might be loud but nothing like i thought it would going by what people say.

Re: Help! I need a proper grinder!
Mal, <300 bucks for a stepless sounds like what I am looking for!!
Reading the reviews, the general problem seems to be the noise, but hey, if i know its grinding my coffee the way I want it, its going to be music to my ears!
Also, I accidentally reposted my message on the "hardware for sale" section because i thought my initial one disappeared into thin air. Please remove it? Ta.
Thanks again fellow snobs.

Re: Help! I need a proper grinder!
If you are looking at the Iberital Challenge (sub - $300 from CS sponsers) then I can vouch for it - I have had mine for more than a year now and am still very happy with it.
A little deaf maybe, :-? , but still happy.
Mal is right - get the best you can afford and you wont regret it.
If not the Iberital and you have more $ to play with then I strongly suggest you get on the phone or email to the various sponsors for advice - many, if not all, sponsors will give CS members a discount from normal retail and their advice is invaluable.
Hope this helps

Re: Help! I need a proper grinder!
Gday Gavin, and Welcome to CoffeeSnobs....... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]Originally posted by gavin link=1197097308/0#0 date=1197097308Hi all,
I have just recently obtained a Rancilio Silvia, but my old grinder does not do the job anymore. What grinders go well with this machine? I cant spend too much $$, looking at around the $200-$250 range? (Obviously Id go for something less than $200 if its something that goes well with the silvia). I dont mind 2nd hand too, if one of you nice ppl have something decent.
My personal view and that of most of us here at CS, is that you should always buy the best grinder you can afford, lots of info to be found throughout the Forum if you do a search. If it was me (and Im on a pension :
), Id be going for the Iberital Challenge as the bare minimum to match up with the Silvia, it is a very capable grinder and ideally constructed as a specialist espresso grinder with infinity adjustment on the grind setting control. As a primer, you could browse through this thread, or this one to get an idea of what types of grinders are out there and what you can expect to pay.
Cheers mate and happy brewing
,
Mal.

Re: Help! I need a proper grinder!
I had a Sunbeam EM450 before a bought Silvia and it has done a fairly good job, its a bit inconsistent and messy but for the $130 I paid for it its not too bad a little machine. I still use it in my workshop for early morning grinds so I dont wake up the household. I now have a Rocky which is doing an excellent job, but the early morning Sunbeam grind is still good. Hope this helps you......
cheers
