  • Mazzer Mini - grind setting for plunger

Whats the ideal setting on the mazzer mini grinder for plunger coffee? Yeah, I know the numbers on the dial are different between machines, but how far do I need to turn the dial from the espresso setting? For espresso I have it set around the 2.5 position. How far should I turn it from that position for plunger? 1/4 turn, 5 turns? I have no idea. I just want to avoid wasting heaps of coffee trying to find the correct position.

    thanks,
    Bill

On mine I do espresso between 7 and 8, and plunger at 9. That seems to work fine for me but I havent really played with it much.

Given the variability in numbers between grinder settings (yes, even between one Mini Mazzer and another!) it may be better to aim for a desired grind consistency instead (ie: I usually aim for something that feels like beach sand when rubbed between my fingers).

Yes, the actual number setting doesnt mean anything, as I said in my original post – that’s not what I’m asking for, but the amount courser or finer that the grind goes with a given amount of turn of the adjustment collar will be consistent between machines, as all Mazzer Minis will have the same pitch thread on their adjustment collars.

So if we are all starting from the same initial fineness setting (ie. espresso grind, or from the “start here” sticker if you want to use some other common comparison point), we should be able to agree on how many numbers courser or finer you need to go from that point for all other brew methods (give or take a bit).

I usually go a little over an inch to the right from the sticker. Of course its meaningless for most, but just keep going coarser until you find the consistency you like.

Hi Bill - yes, I read and understood where you were coming from - my reply was attempting to provide an alternative frame of reference as guidance (ie: for any user on any grinder)  - - consider focusing on the particle size (feel) in addition to solely observing the degree of rotation.  This will help you get a feel (pardon the pun) for how different grind sizes related to different coffee applications (and engage another form of sensory input in the process beyond relying on sight alone)

              Cheers,

We use rock-salt in our house Mal - how finely should I grind the salt so I can compare it to the grind of the coffee    :P ;D
