  • Mazzer Super Jolly - grinder for life?

Hi all. I have a modded Rocky doserless (stepless now). If one could purchase a brand spanker MSJ for $650 + $35 delivery would it be the grinder that you would keep for life? This grinder at this price point has come up twice now that I have seen and I dont know when they are going to stop selling at this price (given the RRP and what second hand ones are advertised for this to me seems like a steal). I would like a doser grinder for my next grinder and dont mind doing tape mods to the veins.

Would the SJ noticeably improve my shots with my FAEMA Due (over the tighter stepless Rocky), or is it worth holding out for second hand Robur or similar conical grinder for similar money (or are they simply not going to show up often enough).

    Cheers all.

    ozscott,

There is no doubt in my mind that a MSJ would provide a somewhat better grind than the rocky..... but not sure how significant that would be.... other than greater control (than the normal stepped rocky) over grind size.

Re second hand Robur or K10 etc.... I wouldnt hold my breath waiting for one of these to come up second hand at a reasonable price.... They would certainly be excellent grinders.... but are so well built and do such a good job.... who is going to sell one off? (when they upgrade to a ??????).... There is just no reason to get rid of one!!!

Waiting for one of these is like me waiting for a reasonably priced second hand Synesso espresso machine.... we can all dream.... but thats about all we will be doing! : :

They certainly do look good and the price is well under wholesale.

I hear that they are a non-Aussie spec- SJ manual whereas ours are all auto cut out. Not that thats an issue for the home user.

They are selling with no labour warranty (and I wonder if theys actually honour the labour component :-?) so the usual caveats apply. Hopefully Australian agents would service them??

I take your point Chris. I am not sold on the likely quality difference as JavaB points out (my stepless mod that tightens the burr carriers at the same time has made a big difference to the Rocky). I like supporting local sellers, but realistically speaking how often do you see a Mazzer SJ returned for warranty or maintenance work - ie if I can change my own burrs when the time comes what else goes wrong. In order to pay out say double this price for initial purchase I think most buyers would need to be convinced that the after sales support would be worth it (and lets face it its not like a complicated espresso machine). If there is a reasonable rate of returns on the MSJ in order to fix them....then perhaps they are not worth buying...see the dilema?

        Cheers mate

You forget the speed difference as well... The SJ grinds more volume - and it should given the larger burrset.

          I love my SJ... :-)

Nar- I think theyre good pickings Scott. Whether youd detect much difference in grind quality Im not so sure...You will notice a big difference in throughput though. They are excellent value if theyre the real McCoy

Re: Mazzer Super Jolly - grinder for life?

Its not hard to service a Super Jolly or any mazzer grinder....because they simply never come in for repairs at work. Maybe an odd return spring (operator error) here and there...and of course new burr sets and snapped hoppers (operator error) but nothing serious like blown relays etc. Theres a reason why Mazzer has such a good reputation...its because theyre rock solid performers (granted...I wouldnt buy one new these days...have you seen the prices? Even wholesale price for us is crazy).

Regarding Roburs and K10s et al. I agree with JavaB. I just recently purchased a K10 and there is no way I am giving this baby up....even for a Robur (unless I start my own business and the volume requires it).

If you believe the grinder you have found is a bargain...just splash out and get it. I thought the K10 was a steal compared to the Robur...which is why I chose it. Im not sure about other coffee companies...but we have our new Super Jollys well over the $700 asking price by Pioneer.

Re: Mazzer Super Jolly - grinder for life?

Thanks David - its not whether I think its a bargain - a new SJ at $650 must be a bargain compared to what they sell for normally in Oz. My question really is whether despite that this grinder is a bargain, whether is a grinder for life, and whether there would be a noticeable improvement in shots from my modded stepless Rocky with tighter grind (no slop in the carriers) than standard....

                  Cheers

...having read the Titan grinder project on Coffeegeek the SJ does look to be a very nice grinder even in the company of the Robur et al with smoothed over sweet shots.

Well in the US (with only one dealer selling them) they are US$100 more expensive than a MSJ...

And as they have only been on the market for a relatively short time (and havent heard of one here in Aus as yet)..... I dont fancy your chances

Re: Mazzer Super Jolly - grinder for life?

I was looking at those cheap new SJs for months...they have been up for grabs for a long time....and was going to take the plunge until I snapped up a S/H one for $300...first (and only) thing I did was take out the auto cut out switch which prevents you cleaning the chute out...so if these dont have the switch, as Chris intimated, I see that as a bonus...
I upgraded from a Tre Spade conical that sells for $300 from a webdealer here in Oz (I paid $120 at the time) and for me the difference is huge:

                            1. much MUCH quieter
                            2. much quicker
                            3. more consistent grind...dont know why, but with the Tre Spade, shot times were all over the place from day to day
                            4. much easier to change the grind settings (Tre Spade has stepless worm thread adjustment so takes forever!)
                            5. to me, seems to take the sharpness out of the coffee..much smoother resulting coffeee
                            6. doesnt cause interference with the telly!!
                            7. does not look huge if you leave the hopper off (tamper in throat)
                            8. built like a brick sh!thouse...should last forever in domestic use
                            Importantly, 1+2+6=happy household !!!
                            Negatives:
                            1. Doser throws to the left quite badly = messy....can be overcome with modification which I will do one day along with the doser tape mod!!

My 2c ... if they are the real deal and not some copy, $685 is a bargain for a new SJ...I wouldnt worry about warranty...you are paying 2nd hand prices here anyway

                            Cheers

Thats the way Id look at it. I too have been looking at these, I just hope they didnt fall off the back of a truck.

Id have one but the better 1/2 (and tru C/S of the house) is sticking with the Static monster Nemox till we find a MAZ-mini-e 2 go for $500 ish there is supposed to be a blue moon soon......
"Im too busy cleaning up after the Nemox to be impatient"
