You can always put the grinder near the window.

Man, once you try it out you will want it as your primary grinder, they are just awesome and very easily dialed in as well as forgiving enough in their construction to allow for minor adjustment between shots. I have 2 of them, one for decaf (mocha java of course) and they simply rock, I also grind on demand unless I have a number of friends over and then I will let the doser chamber fill up to the point of switching itself off.

A truly professional grind every time, youll love it............ Ray.

    No way JavaB.

I would consider a makeshift hopper but the original will stay intact in case it leaves me for a new owner some time in the future.
It will probably outlive me so it deserves to stay whole.

Well TG the answers obvious.......................................cut a big circular hole into the base of your over head cupboard................when you need to fill the hopper, just open the door.
Im sure Mrs TG will approve!

    Nice beastie btw, well done.

Wow that a great find....was it an evilbay buy? There was one just ended there when we started looking.

I find its funny what people say about the size of grinders. Every time I mention Mazzer Major to anyone they say "geee have you got space for that, there is no way I could have that on my bench". There sure is a big difference in the size but wowa there is a large difference is whats going on in there. I guess overhead cupboards show the extra hight more as its the space above that gets "seen". The Major sits in our place well and we can still get in the front door

I guess in my mind its the 18kg/hr v 3-4kg/hr that "makes me giggle". But why not use it..you appreciate your coffee and this think is going to help with that appreciation (all be it at 18kg/hr, he he)

I say 3 cheers for the MC
    hip hooray

By the way, its not tapered.

Im sure your sawing tip will come in handy for someone.

Im still awestruck by the size of the thing.
My Macap is a big solid beast but the Rossie dwarfs it.
The collar of the Rossi is about level with the top of the hopper on the Macap.

The Macap weighs 9kg, the Rossi over 19kg.
The hoppers are 0.6 and 1.6kg respectively and the doser capacity 200g to 360g.
    Height is 470mm vs 660mm.

Grinding capacity 3 - 4kg/hour for the MAcap vs 18kg/hour on the Rossi.

Some people here, I know, would love to have a Macap.
The Rossi makes it look like a toy.

I dont see myself using the Rosi much as you can see it doesnt allow the kitchen cupboards to open. ;D
    Ahhhh...

    You need some hopper surgery

Masking tape wrapped around the hopper at the appropriate point..... a hacksaw with a fine blade.... and your hopper wont feel a thing

I reduced the DRM hopper to about 1/3 (I grind on demand in any case). The hopper is rectangular so the lid still fitted perfectly after the surgery - and the grinder fits under the above bench cupboards. It looks like yours might taper and that could cause a problem but Im sure a solution can be found...... and then it wont dominate quite so much!

    Nice to know.

The Macap is pretty easy to track the beans with.
I dont need to move more than a notch or two either way.
But I am mostly drinking my Kimel.

When I try a different bean the first shot may be out but its quickly dialled in, knowing the Macap as I do.

Ill post back here again with some progress photos and when done cleaning Ill post again with a report on comparing to the Macap.

It was a bargain I couldnt pass on.

    TG,

    Congrats on your new grinder.

Yep, those burrs look pretty good to me.

They dont need to be razor sharp but shouldnt feel dull (with a rounded edge).... especially the bottom third of the conical which does the fine grinding. The top (bean breaking) and middle (coarse grinding) are no where near as critical and normally manage to stay pretty sharp.

Its the bottom third that do all the serious work and they need to have a bit of an edge on them if they are to perform at their best (but certainly not razor sharp - even when new).

Ill be interested to see how you go with the comparison. I find the combined conical/flat DRM a LOT more forgiving when it comes to grind size adjustments.... I had to change the LC jnr grinder heaps more to track the beans as they age, humidity changes etc in order to get a correct pour. Will be interesting to see if you find the same.

    Not yet Mal.

I know it runs quietly and the beans that were left in the hopper went through without any trouble.

Now that Ive taken the top burr off Id have to dial it in so if Im going to give it a thorough clean Id rather only pull it apart once.

The burrs do look OK to me.
    No obvious chips etc.
They dont feel razor sharp (should they?) but look nice overall.

The Macap will keep me going until Im ready to do a side by side taste test.

Ive decided I will need to pull it down for a thorough clean.

Are the photos good enough to comment on the state of the burrs?
