    Re: Why Replace Burrs?

If you have worn burrs after awhile you are not cutting the beans you are actually pummeling and mashing them and squezzing out a sizeable amount of oils inside the grinder thereby losing flavor and over time clogging up your grinder. Your grind is one of the most importent components in your cup. Watch it well.......

Thats great news dweeby! Its amazing how much difference it makes when those rancid oils are cleaned away.

Those beans youre using atm should season the grinder v. nicely!

    Re: Why Replace Burrs?

Hey guys (and others who are interested),

I replaced my burrs yesterday and the result is pretty groovy.
During the process I also removed a heap of built up old, manky grinds and oils compacted together.
So Im not sure if the changes are just the burrs or the cleaning as well, but the first thing I noticed was that the grinder is now about 3000dB quieter! The next pleasant suprise was finding that it would now easily dispose of all the beans in the chamber (whereas before I couldnt get rid of the last 5-10grams).
And finally, yes the coffee came out better first time and tastes pretty good too (although Im using beans that were roasted in a little popper less than 48hours ago).
All in all a good thing to do...

    cheers,
    matt

ps. for those interested, I now set the grinder 10 settings coarser than before replacing them if that gives any indication as to how worn the burrs were.

Having been in a similar position to you it is definately a worthwhile exercise to replace the burrs.

Make sure you spend the money on originals [rather than generic replacements] JavaB and others have commented on how inferier the generic brands are.

If your interested in before and after improvements

    Thanks for your speedy replies!

    - Your "tear and rub" theory as opposed to the desired "chop and slice" seems to make sense greg
    - and thanks other peeps for the tip that its actually for a set (bargain!)

    cheers,

Yeah, from memory the $37 is for the set. Its a bargain even with the postage IMO. WELL WORTH CHANGING! Itd be a good oportunity to give the guts a really good clean too.

Like MarcS said, youll probably never have to change them again.

Youve done well to obtain a RR45 - they produce a fantastic grind, provided the burrset is in good nick. Id be replacing them if they have been 10 years in the grinder in a cafe environment. And at $37 a set (I think a set), its money well spent and youll probably never have to replace them again.

    Re: Why Replace Burrs?

    Hi Matt,

If the burrs are blunt (which Im certain yours would be after that sort of work), the burrs will be tearing and rubbing the beans rather than slicing them. This will lead to less consistent particle size which can lead to earlier blonding and less shot to shot consistency. Just as cutting with a sharp knife is quicker and requires less effort than a blunt one, grinding with new burrs will be faster and generate less heat which apparently makes a difference to the taste (one reason why the big grinders have a slower rotation speed).

So long as you keep things clean and follow any provided instructions I doubt youll have any alignment issues. If you have muck between the burrs and the mounting planes youll obviously get them offline but if you keep it all clean you should be OK (have never replaced burrs yet so cant honestly say).

    Why Replace Burrs?

    Hi All,

I have recently upgraded from my Delonghi KG100 (Disappointment is a generous word!) to an old "Used for 10 years in a Cafe" Gino Rossi RR45.
Its producing much better coffee already on my little Breville Cafe Roma (with non-pressurized filter basket) but I can tell that the burrs are probably pretty worn (not too sharp to rub your finger against).
Just wondering is it really important to replace the burrs (I see CoffeParts.com sells them for $37 - presumably thats just for 1)? Does it make much of a difference to the grinds and therefore taste? Why does it matter? And having not a whole lot of experience, is it safe to assume I can just order the burrs and replace them myself without stuffing up the alignment etc...?
Thanks O wonderful Coffee Snob community!
    - matt

Working...
