Re: Advise required on Mods
Grug,
The stationary burr is held in place by a plastic ring..... and this doesnt hold it very firmly....
The rotating burr is attached to the motor shaft..... and on the ones Ive played with the motor only has bushings (which arent a good fit)..... and there is side to side play and also play in the up and down directions..... compared to a Rocky (even before it is modded) they are a piece of cr@p!
You can grab the rotating burr (power off and unit unplugged :
) and you will probably find you can move it from side to side and up and down as well (we are only talking small amounts.... but with grinding for espresso..... any amount is too much!)
Also the burr set isnt like a normal burr with three regions - "bean breaking", "coarse grind" and "Fine grind"..... there are only two regions..... and that makes for a poor quality grind as well...... great for plunger coffee and OK for machines with pressurised baskets - and thats about it!

Re: Advise required on Mods
Grug,
Someone else will have to comment about the specifics of your machine.
On the Rocky the stabilisation was so easy it did not require the removal of the burrs at all--only the burr carrier.

Re: Advise required on Mods
Gday Greg,
I would look into the stabilisation of the Burrs but Im not so confident about pulling the casing off and playing with things that I have no idea what Im looking at. If I break it Ill have to buy my staff a new one. Will put spacers under the Stator Burr tonight to close the gap between the burrs and see how we go.
When you guys talk about stabilisation of the Burrs is this somthing I would be able to see running the grinder with out the hopper in place...?

Re: Advise required on Mods
Warning-I have never seen the insides of a DeLonghi grinder.

The problem I have experienced with Delonghi grinders is that the burrs are not held in place securely enough.... and wobble.... making the size of the grains very uneven.
This sounds as if some stabilisation of the burrs would also be in order. I would be investigating how they are arranged and seeing what is possible--and could I do it.
I know that modding the stability of the Rocky with teflon tape on the threads, and installing a spacer-spring (rubber) on the adjuster has made it into a better machine and stepless to boot.

Thank for that JavaB.
I have tried to google mods but have not had any luck finding them.

Re: Advise required on Mods
Grug,
Yes, that would work..... but may not gain you anything!
The problem I have experienced with Delonghi grinders is that the burrs are not held in place securely enough.... and wobble.... making the size of the grains very uneven. The design of the grinder is, in a word, POOR!!! As you force the grinder to make finer and finer grinds (there are a few mods on the internet for this)..... all you end up doing is producing a relatively wider range of grind sizes.... from dust to the correct size....
With coarser grinds this is not a problem (plunger for example) +- 0.2 mm in 1mm - not much variation ( 0.8 to 1.2 mm) but when grinding to say 0.25mm you will end up with 0.05 to 0.45 and that is the problem!!! To get a good extraction from that will take a miracle.
These grinders really arent made for espresso grinding..... and cant really be modified to do it either.

Advise required on Mods
Good Morning CSs,
I had a play with the Delonghi KG59 from work last night and was hoping someone could confirm the little mod Im going to do is not going to kill this little machine.
Basicly the hopper has the Stator Burr attached to it by 3 small screws, Im thinking that if I remove the Stator Burr and place a washer or spacer of some sort under the Burr at each screw this will bring the Stator Burr closer to the Rotator Burr.
By then starting with the hopper set at the most course grind and slowly turn it using the 10 grind settings till I get a finer grind.
Dose this sound like it would work...? It sounds to easy to me....
Any thoughts...?
Cheers Grug
