Yes, agreed. Bad choice of words on my part. A gear cannot drive a worm, but as the op has found, vibration and tapping of the gear against worm can allow the worm to turn....
Thread tape on the a8 carrier threads may help too, if the carrier is loose on the threads.

Actually, it can if the clearance is excessive. Due to the increase in angular force as the gears separate, sufficient torque is generated to rotate the worm gear and of course the worm wheel. Unfortunately, when this starts to happen, more and more wear occurs that exacerbates the situation until it becomes necessary to replace the gear set.Originally posted by Jackster View PostMechanically, there is no way a gear can turn a worm. For the k3, maybe some thread tape on the burr carrier adjusting thread. The k3 has no adjustment worm drive, just turn the carrier.... My carrier is pretty tight, certainly doesn't move while grinding. Your friends must be quite loose, and I'd say some thread tape would tighten it up nicely
The a8 has the worm drive adjustment. . Is there a spring that provides some drag on the adjuster? This maybe could be shimmed/adjusted tighter?
Mechanically, there is no way a gear can turn a worm. So your worm must be vibrating and loose on its own. Tighten your worm and it will not change again. It's understandable the drag is gone if the grinder is well used

G'day mate...
This can sometimes be due to excessive wear/play between the worm gear and worm wheel (gear set).
If the gear set can be adjusted, try to adjust the worm gear towards the worm wheel such that end play is minimal (about 0.005").
This should stop the burr carrier from unwinding...

Compak A8 and K3 grind dial moving while grinding
I purchased a used Compak A8 from a Roaster that decided to close its doors and it works pretty well. A while later I noticed that while grinding beans, the dial setting knob would turn slowly coarser. I could just manually stop it turning with my fingers so it was not too big a deal. More of an annoyance plus its not the main grinder I'd use as it is my backup grinder which I might use twice a week at the most.
A friend of mine bought a used Compak K3 off this site a while back and just this morning he tells me that the grinder setting dial is moving while grinding... Now, this can't be a coincidence right? I tried searching through the search engines on this issue but couldn't find anything on it. Anyone else experience this and how do you fix it?
