I used to have a Lelit PL44 and I reckon its an awesome espresso grinder. Be aware that its just a small conical burr grinder, but in my opinion it’s way ahead of any of the other small conical burr grinders. The build and grind quality is excellent and I wouldn’t have an issue recommending one if the price was right.Originally posted by rpgilbert View PostI'm in a similar boat. Got the same budget and ideally looking for the same machine. If I were in Melbourne I'd look at snapping up that MM Electronic that is posted above. I've also been considering the Lelit PL44

You should have a bit of an idea based on how much coffee you normally go through. You can also try scratching your fingernail on the burrs, if they don't leave a mark easily they're probably due for replacement. If you can see the edge of the burrs they're probably due.

How do you know when you hit 300kg haha. Noob question - is there a way to check when the burrs require replacing visually?Originally posted by level3ninja View PostAny of these will do you well.
A little above budget but close to new, reliable, replace the burrs every 300kgs and you can pass it down to your grandchildren.

Same as above but with a doser

Small footprint, bulletproof mechanically, little bit plastic fantastic on the outside.

Has a doser and needs a new set of burrs. Can be easily modified to be stepless instead of stepped.

Has a doser and might also be stepped

Personally I'd go for the Mini Electronic or the Vario

I have an identical Macap M4 to the one advertised above. They're stepless adjustment via the worm drive at the rear of the hopper. Mine is approx 14y/o and hasn't missed a beat.Originally posted by level3ninja View Post

Grinder advice
G'day all
New here and hoping you might be able to help me out. I’ve recently started the journey to better espresso with the purchase of a La Pavoni lever machine. Its going well, but the old grinder I have been using probably needs a bit of an upgrade (Sunbeam 480). I seem to have ready a gazillion reviews, but can’t get my head around how fine is fine enough? It seems to be quite subjective and the more I read the more confused I get.
Can anyone give me a recommendation of what I should be looking for grinder wise? Only use will be espresso in the LP , smaller is better (very limited by bench space), 3-4 shots per day and I have a preference for simpler and long lived over millions of options that I’ll never use. Budget preference is to keep it under $500, but flexible if need be. In Melbourne if that helps.
Any advice or recommendations greatly accepted.
Cheers,
Tim
