  • Splitting the Grinders category

Just an idea now that I notice that "Grinders" is about to hit 20 pages. Given that the espresso machine category is split into 4, would the Administrator consider splitting the grinders into two categories at say $0-599 and $600+. There is quite a large range of grinders below $600 and the factors in play with them are usually significantly different from the bigger, semi-professional and professional grinders.

    Any thoughts?

Nice idea. Not sure how long it would take me to move em though?!?!

Can someone who knows pricing give me a starting list in this thread please?

PS: Is this posted in the wrong section

Yes this probably should be under Grinders but since it was a general question, not a discussion about any specific grinders, I put it here. :-/

Here is an initial list re splitting:

The following are machines that are sub $600 (unless their price has gone up in the last week!!)

        • Anfim – KS
        • Ascaso MT1
        • Ascaso i-mini
        • Ascaso i-home
        • Bezzera BB004
        • Compak K-3 Touch
        • Compak K3 Elite
        • Cunill Café Tranquillo
        • ECA Doserless
        • Gaggia MDF Grinder
        • Iberital Challenge
        • Isomac Granmacinino
        • Isomac Professionale Inox Grinder
        • LaSpaziale Junior
        • Nemox Lux
        • Rancilio Rocky
        • Sunbeam EM450
        • Sunbeam EM480
        • Wega - Mini Instant 5.4

The following are machines that are definitely at $600 and above

        • all Mazzers
        • all Macaps
        • ECA Best
        • All Compak other than K3’s
        • All Gino Rossi (I think)
        • All Unic (I think)

As a final thought, even though I initially suggested a split based on price, it should probably be a functional (Entry Level/High End?) together with a price point that can be moved over time.

            Re: Splitting the Grinders category

Splitting hairs I know...but I would think the Compak K-3s and ECA doserless should be grouped in the higher category?

Just that their probably in competition with the Mini, and would be considered as a step into "serious" grinder territory.

            Just my 2c :

I reckon theyre closer to Rocky territory which I reckon should be in the lower half.

                          Re: Splitting the Grinders category

If anyone can add to this list (and add prices if available) it would probably help Andy in splitting the Grinders category and help others in choosing. I noticed a while back that while the information provided was great and very useful, the pricing on the list of grinders available under "Information /Reviews of Grinders" was no longer accurate, and there doesnt seem to be any simple mechanism for updating it. It may be possible to just have a listing (sorted either alphabetically or by price), with a price that can be updated by the Mods, and an xml link to the body of the document where the actual machine is discussed, photos placed etc.

Also, from what I have seen, the sub $599 group should include

                          • all Breville grinders,
                          • all deLonghi grinders

Problem is that none of them would be considered to be espresso grinders...Perhaps a category for plunger etc? :-/

Agreed 2mcm, but if thats all that circumstances allow then thats what people get.  Even the CSers with higher grade espresso machines and grinders often seem to have an old or lower grade grinder as a standby or for use in a press.  And judging by the queries under Grinders there are a number of Breville and LeLonghis amongst our membership (and maybe a Krupps?).

Which is not to say that we wouldnt all probably prefer an M4D or a WBC spec K10 or, (for those with really big kitchens) a 3 phase Robur.;D  Regrettably, financial and relationship reality often intervenes.
