My Baratza Sette 270 came with no shims installed, and I quickly ended up reducing the macro down to 1 and was still not getting a fine enough grind fro espresso.
Adding one of the two the shims that came with the unit, as per the guide I found Baratza's website, was the easy solve. Espresso grind setting now sitting at around 7.
Pity it didn't come shipped with one shim already installed knowing that is what's needed to obtain a grind suitable for espresso.

I had two baratza 270 machines

Neither required me to install a shim

      until I sold both machines
I was grinding at 3 to 4 and doing long pre infusion extractions

I'm having surprised and slightly skeptical that, out of the box, you absolutely needed a shim.

Manufacturing specs cannot be that out of order.
That 1 customer will not need a shim and one will need a shim.

If I were you, I'd email baratza.
Tell them why you needed to install a shim straight out the box.

Are you using an e61 machine?

Is that a 270 or 270W? My 270wi came with no shims installed, but 2 as extras in case needed. For some reason--I can't remember why--a year or so later I put in one shim. Espressos are about 9 macro.

In your case robusto, the shim serves no purpose - because without it you'd be grinding at 3-4
Baratza says each shim adds 5-6 levels

Its not harming anything - well other than maybe perhaps reducing centrifugal force - but that would be negligible

well other than maybe perhaps reducing centrifugal force
How would the addition or removal of a shim contribute to this exactly?

While I'm not a rotating machinery engineer, I understand that unattached-mass will affect centrifugal efficiency.

But like I said earlier, negligible if shim is securely tightened to shaft.

The shim/s of course fit tightly between the burr and carrier and can't move independently of the burr. In any case, the centre cone burr where the shim is placed, is stationary, and it's the outer burr --which has no shims--which rotates.

Hi, does anybody know if the original Baratza-Shims are required for additional adjustment (which I have lost unfortunately...) - or who has experience in using conventional hardware. Which did you use (external and internal diameters please)?

What are you grinding at now?
If you're grinding at 1A and its still not fine enough, then yes you would need a shim.

Adding a shim at your current 1A, will be the equivalent of 5A or 6A.
So you could then go down to 5A or 4A.

hedonist222 At the very moment it is fine enough. I've been using the Sette for 1,5 years now and just a few weeks ago I had it at 3 - so I guess I will have to adjust the grinder in a while at least. It was stable for about a year and actually I was very surprised to be forced to move it to 1...

Are you at 3 or 1 now?

Have you tried cleaning out the machine?

I don't recall going down very drastically in the years I owned it.
                    Maybe a notch or two.

From 5-6 to 3-4 after a few months.
                    Then no more changes.

I grind about 30 grams a day everyday.

I'm grinding at 1 right now after a year at 3. Needed adjustment only when trying out a different coffee. Have cleaned the machine with a brush recently. I grind about 40 grams daily.

RainerLink, The shim is 0.3mm thick, the ID is approx 12.5mm, OD approx 29mm. Then you have those two slots, about 5.4mm long by 5mm wide

Are you positive you've screwed the cone back on fully?

Yes, actually I cleaned it after being forced to adjust to 1 - and it stayed the same.

                              Try emailing Baratza.

Going to 1 seems extreme in my opinion.
