I got my 270wi a few weeks ago and installed one of the shims straight away before using it. The reason was simply that I'd read here and saw in some YT videos that most people had to eventually add at least 1 shim for espresso grinding. Now, I'm on macro settings 6 and 7 depending on the bean.

    Try emailing Baratza.

Going to 1 seems extreme in my opinion.

Yes, actually I cleaned it after being forced to adjust to 1 - and it stayed the same.

Are you positive you've screwed the cone back on fully?

RainerLink, The shim is 0.3mm thick, the ID is approx 12.5mm, OD approx 29mm. Then you have those two slots, about 5.4mm long by 5mm wide

Are you at 3 or 1 now?

Have you tried cleaning out the machine?

I don't recall going down very drastically in the years I owned it.
    Maybe a notch or two.

From 5-6 to 3-4 after a few months.
    Then no more changes.

I grind about 30 grams a day everyday.

What are you grinding at now?
If you're grinding at 1A and its still not fine enough, then yes you would need a shim.

Adding a shim at your current 1A, will be the equivalent of 5A or 6A.
So you could then go down to 5A or 4A.

The shim/s of course fit tightly between the burr and carrier and can't move independently of the burr. In any case, the centre cone burr where the shim is placed, is stationary, and it's the outer burr --which has no shims--which rotates.

Its not harming anything - well other than maybe perhaps reducing centrifugal force - but that would be negligible
While I'm not a rotating machinery engineer, I understand that unattached-mass will affect centrifugal efficiency.

But like I said earlier, negligible if shim is securely tightened to shaft.

How would the addition or removal of a shim contribute to this exactly?

Is that a 270 or 270W? My 270wi came with no shims installed, but 2 as extras in case needed. For some reason--I can't remember why--a year or so later I put in one shim. Espressos are about 9 macro.
