  • Mahlkonig Peak Grinder - worth the money?

I was wandering what forum members think of the Mahlkonig grinders in general and the Peak in particular?
Looks like a superbly designed piece of kit with big flat 83mm burrs - but very expensive.
The Peak seems to provide good fine adjustments - which I think is important.

While I have been happy with the Kony for several years - grinder technology seems to have moved on with notable improvements in fine adjustment, low grind retention and consistency.
While the Kony in my opinion provides a Very good grind, the adjustment via a large collar is starting to feel like a limitation.

With my recent foray into Coffee roasting with multiple bean varieties to grind and regular adjustments I am thinking of a possible grinder upgrade.
But maybe the Kony is as good as it gets all things taken into account?

If anyone has the Mahlkonig Peak I would be interested to hear of the experience.

    Nope, not worth it IMHO in bang for buck terms, you would be better off with either something like;

    a) Niche Zero - Kony burrs, easy adjustment and single dosing, very little waste if you are roasting small batches
    b) Large Flat Burr / Exotic Single Doser - Ceado E37S, Kafetek Monolith Flat, Lagom 64 (I know this one is not large burrs but is getting pretty good reception).

If you are looking at that sort of money there are some really good specialty grinders around.

Of course I haven't owned a Peak but have used a fair few Conicals right up to 83mm. I have used and can recommend Niche Zero, it is super for swapping between roasts and even useful for cold drip/V60/

Hi Rooster Ben, thanks for the advice above. . I am certainly not hung up on the Peak but found the design interesting and would only consider buying in top condition used if it ticked all the boxes. But clearly it doesn’t rate as Number One.
I thought maybe the Peak had cult status and performance to match - noting the reviews and 5K+ price tag.
I suspect the high end Compak grinders are also worth considering.

The cult status which is maybe fading just a little is linked to the Mahlkonig EK43, if you get one and the Titus burr alignment tools this is renowned for getting very high extraction yields. But for home use you need a few accessories like small hopper and single dosing stuff.

The other grinder which now seems to be a specialty favourite in cafes is the Mythos One and I was going to mention the Eureka Olympus 75E which in some models uses the Mythos blades in a more compact footprint(there was one for sale here this week but just sold). Again not a single doser but pretty low retention and fine adjustment.

The Kony is Mazzer’s best grinder by a mile, so if you’re switching to something else you want to make sure it’s a true upgrade. The Peak by all accounts is a very good grinder, but isn’t designed for domestic use and like most Mahlkonigs can suffer from poor burr alignment. If I had that sort of money to spend I’d be looking at something that is either specifically designed for home use or more capable at crossing over. The Niche Zero is the entry point and minimum standard here. As RB mentioned above there’s also good options from the likes of Ceado and Kafetek. There’s also the EG1 and Lagom and etc.

Leroy, I would be pretty disappointed to find a Mahlkonig Peak with mis aligned burrs!
5K+ should provide engineering excellence - and a lifetime of enjoyment not defects.

Just one question on the Kony - is there an easy way to tell when the burrs need to be replaced?
I gave mine a good clean and noticed there wasn’t much edge sharpness.

As you say the Kony is highly respected and I won’t replace it unless there is a good reason to do so.
I will explore the Ceado and Kafetek options.

OK having just investigated the Ceado YouTube reviews - they look like a very well made machine.
‘The fine adjustment is very well executed and electronic interface.
And yes the e37K Or e37S would be a good upgrade (!) ........
