  • M2M grinder seizing

    Dear Fellow Coffee Addicts,

I’ve had this M2M C83 Macap grinder for 4 years now. Really love it. It has started seizing with grinds collecting in the recess below the lower conical burr and stopping the burrs spinning. No grinds coming out of the machine. I have carefully cleaned it and tried again with coarse and fine settings with the same result (please see attached image).

Was working fine until I tried to make more coarse grounds to try some cold brew coffee.

I had the same problem some years ago and found that a specific brand of beans would work. No beans working now and I am withdrawing from caffeine 😱

Would really appreciate any advice you could give me.

    Thanks in advance.

      Is something obstructing the outlet?

Wow! That looks like a fair amount of grounds trapped there. Can you clean all of it out?

There's also a pin in the chute of the grinder. If you remove the chute, you can use some needle nose pliers to remove the pin. Might help, might not, probably worth a try to see if you get a little less retention that way. You might find that the chute is pretty packed with solidified coffee grounds!

yep that is the most likely explanation I suspect. I had a similar issue once. It's easy to think that the chute is clear when it is in fact blocked in a very geometrically even pattern.

prh BoP @BarryO’Speedwagon Thanks for quick replies. Have used my vaccuum to remove grinds (see attached) will try your suggestions.
        freatky appreciated.

Can't remember Before you completely remove it, have you tried running something like a pipe cleaner (or even a piece of wire) through the chute starting from the grind chamber side.

Or a wooden skewer. At Bunnings the other day, I saw these straw brushes (presumably for cleaning reusable drinking straws) which I thought might be handy for cleaning the chute my own M2M.

Hey CaffeineAddict, remove the hex directly above the chute (careful not to lose the washer), remove the base of the grinder and careful of the wires. Below the chute will be a bigger hex, remove that and the chute will be free.

I went ahead and removed the pin from the chute this morning since I read this. I've heard of people doing it before so I've wanted to do it but never known how to get the chute off. It was pretty easy and the pin slides out the bottom (not sure if this is the same on the latest M2). My grinder hasn't had any seizing issues but I've noticed a lot of grinds building up before the chute and I've had some minor clumping - two things that people often boast not happening on these grinders. First impressions are that it seems to have gotten rid of any clumping and distributes grounds better into the basket. Why did they add that pin??? I'm guessing to reduce static as there is a ground wire running to it. However I use a funnel so that won't be an issue for me.

            Is the ground attached elsewhere?

Yes, there are two separate ground points. That’s what sparked the thought

              Dear Coffee Colleagues,
Tried to deconstruct my grinder as per instruction of BoP and others, but had appreciation of my technical incompetence.
looked inside the bowl of the lower burr and saw the top of the chute clogged with grinds. Used a wooden skewer to dislodge. All working now. Grind a bit coarse at the moment (need to adjust) but all working OK.
Had emailed Macap Italy and they sent me some diagrams. Thought I’d post here in case they are useful.
Really appreciate everyone’s help with this.
              BoP prh @BarrySpeedwagon Thanks.
