  • Eureka Mignon

    Hi everyone!
Has anyone upgraded from Sunbeam Cafe Series grinder to Eureka Mignon (their entry level model).
will it make a significant difference?
Ive recalibrated my Sunbeam and I’m getting a very fine grind now, but I’m till getting terrible results. I’m wondering if I should upgrade or simply keep working on my technique instead?
    thank you

I didn't have the sunbeam grinder, but am told the Breville smart grinder pro was an upgrade to it. I recently upgraded from the Breville to the entry level Eureka, and it was definitely an upgrade and made a huge difference in the cup. Big difference in consistency of the grind.

One thing I will mention though is the Eureka is a bit messy. I tried 3D printed parts to resolve, but in the end I've been most happy with picking up a dosing cup to solve it.

I had the same upgrade path as Whorl some years ago and echo his/her comments.
      Cheers

One more question. Entry level Mignon has no grading. For someone pretty limited when it comes to espresso making skills. How would I know where to start grind wise? Like there’s no dial to start with and I don’t want to go through kilos of beans just to get to the starting point. Is there a guide like “15 turns clock wise” to start espresso sized grind? And then I can play Around with 2-3 turns each way? Thanks

Mine was pretty close to right straight out of the box. It does have a numbered dial, but only make small changes at a time, certainly not 2-3 turns.

My Eureka Mignon is over 7 years old and still going strong. It will give you years of faithful service. I upgraded from a Lux which I believe the Sunbeam grinder is based on. The Mignon definitely improved my game.

New grinders are usually in the ball park as Whorl indicated.

I have a trick I used when dialling in a new grinder:

              1. Grind a bit of coffee into your hand
              2. Squeeze the grinds by forming a fist
              3. If the grinds clump together when you release your fist, you are in the ball park
              4. If the grinds do not clump, turn the dial 1 to 2 notches finer while grinding (this is important) and go to step 1
              5. Brew to fine tune by fraction of a notch

I hope that helps. Best of luck.

I use VST baskets which requires a finer grind than normal. I have not found it to be an issue. I do use naked portafilter from time to time.

$20 dosing cup solved it for me. No mess grinding into that, I can easily weigh my grind, and transfer to portafilter is easy as.

Yes, I use a dosing cup too but not because of clumps. Agree that a dosing cup prevents spillage and is a good accessory to get. The Mignon cannot take a portafilter fitted with a funnel.
