There’s a Compak and a couple of Mazzers for sale on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace near me, so I’d been looking at those sources. Those type of machines should last for a long time and as long as you can see & listen to some coffee going through them, it’s a cheap way to get quality.

Have a look at DIMAL’s sticky at the top of this section - particularly the bit about stepless. If I had my time over, I would get a stepless for espresso fine tuning.

How do you typically prepare your coffee? Filter, espresso, aeropress?

Where are you located? I have two Macap M2M's looking for new homes.

Assuming your main interest is espresso...and even if not....you'll find the same advice on any number of earlier posts mate.
Have been down this road myself, full disclosure....
At this price point the preloved market is your best friend, otherwise its pretty much either a good quality metal burr hand grinder or the House of Pain (lol!) in power grinders in respect of ease of use, grind consistency and reliability.
You can get the odd outlier like the Cunill Tranquilo but they're for the truly dedicated.
Anything like a Compak K3/Macap M2M/Mazzer Mini or Super Jolly et al, even though not flavour of the month will still give very satisfactory results. You'll have heaps of online assist available too.
Brew grinders are perhaps a little less demanding at entry level but even so, your budget does look a heck of a lot better going preloved.
Should you find something that looks suitable, don't be afraid to ask a specific question, there's a lot of very knowledgeable and helpful people on the forum.
