Just pulled a shot with my Niche at setting 13 without properly dialling in, smack in the middle of the Niche Espresso range and roughly where I pull most of my shots. Shot finished in 27s, great crema and solid taste. Will fine up a micro notch but overall, pretty decent.

Conical burrs are always more forgiving off the bat than flat burrs, but if you can't even get the H1 close to the same time and consistency then I would be trying to get the store you bought it from to take a look and test it.

Thanks all for the advice and PMs, i've reached out to the supplier I purchased from (a site sponsor) and they are looking into it. I do get the sense that something is not quite right and I am getting an unexpected result...

I am however able to get pretty good shots at the 0.3 - 0.4 range, great crema, flavour and hit the numbers I am aiming for.

Worst case, it would appear that my measurement / LCD component is not working properly out of the box or is inconsistent with other users' models.

Once the dust settles I can do an in depth comparison with the Niche. I have to say, bar the current LCD issue, im super impressed so far.

          Hey Yochiya,
Have you got any follow up on your situation? I am experiencing very much the same thing as you have described. I'm grinding at around 0.3 to 0.4 using the VST 15gm and stock ECM basket for comparison. I have been really concentrating on puck prep, with various WDT methods, also shaking in a cup and a voodoo dance. There is always channeling evident which I can't seem to get rid of. I feel as if the low grind setting is not helping the channeling situation?
Did you speak to the supplier and get any info?

          Regards
          Mogs

          @Mogs

I got in touch with the seller who got in touch with the supplier. They were not able to really resolve or properly comment on it. In fact I would say I was a touch dissapointed with the level of support and general interest sadly.

I was however able to get decent shots in that range with no channeling but it certainly took some time and a bit of work.

I'd be happy to upload a video of my shots in that grind range for reference. Perhaps you can upload a vid of your workflow and pull, someone might spot something.

Have you tried aiming for a 20-25s shot? Just a thought but sometimes these channel less than 30s shots. Also, 15g shots do tend to channel a little easier as you typically grind a touch finer. If you have 18 or larger baskets. Might be worth giving it a go.

Thanks for the feedback Yochiya. If you were able to post a video of your shot that would be cool. I have just received a bottomless portafilter and will get a 20g basket shortly as well. Hopefully I can work some things out with those tools. I am generally pulling shorter shots in the 1:1.5-1:2 range. The latest change I made yesterday was to overdose the 15g basket to 16g, which allowed the grind to come up to 0.5, this seemed to help the extraction a little.
I'll keep working on it. Thanks again for your thoughts.

I printed a small hopper to replace the original hopper and it could decrease popcorn well.

I feel like a right pillock. I finally got to my roaster after lockdown and picked up my usual blend roasted 3 days ago. I set the H1 at the usual 1.2/4 and what comes out? A gusher ffs. I'm now down to just under 0.9 for the usual nice product. It's never happened before even after just two days. Oh well..

Probably not the end of the world? A number is simply that. Will it grind fine enough to do what you need it to do?

If it we're easy everyone would be roasting and brewing at home! This is the way.

Hi all - just thought I would post a PDF copy of the manual. It's not available on the Heycafe website. I seem to have lost mine and Coffee Parts kindly supplied one.

Hey guys just read the comments about this grinder. If you're using a VST or other precision basket, it's likely that your grind setting is going to be a lot more fine. Precision baskets are known to get a higher flow compared to the stock standard baskets. I'm also running mine somewhere between 0.3 and 0.4 to brew 40g in around 39 seconds (30 seconds plus pre infusion time on my breville DB). 39 seconds sounds high but has been a game changer for me and the cupping to not include pre infusion in the 30 second brew time.

I agree with most of the other reviews here. The grinder is solid and overall love it and have now worked out a worflow process that works for my setup. The hopper indeed feels a little cheap and the grind retention is low enough for me to purge out old grinds before grinding straight into my pf and still get 20g consistently (20g in - there must still be some retention of old grinds that still get pushed through as I sometimes end up with more than what I put in).

I also agree that a pf funnel is an absolute must for grinding into the pf. Have used the stock dosing cup and it doesn't fit well into my pf. Have purchased a 58.5 dosing cup and still isn't too efficient for me and results in a bit of channeling. Dosing funnel works the best followed by distribution tool followed by tamp works best for me.

Hey @kevs88 after every 1kg of beans, I open up the plastic (chrome) cover on the vertical shoot and brush out the retained grinds. Quite a bit comes out (including any retention around the hopper mouth that you may have brushed into the grinder).

                Hey Kevs,
I wonder what type of funnel you are using? And do you hold the funnel up against the platform that is above the button? I’m wondering if said platform gets in the way of using a funnel and if it could be removed?
                Cheers

Hey Mogs the platform cannot be removed. It is fixed into the main body of the grinder. On the other hand, the bottom piece that slides up and down can be removed.

To add to this, and someone has mentioned this earlier in this thread. Conical burr grinders are really more forgiving than flat burr grinders. For me personally, poor puck prep manifested in spurty shots and channelling (and hurt my ego a bit perhaps) showing up much more frequently. VSTs added to that and further highlighted imperfections in prep.

I noticed that it is mentioned in the manual that the H1 grinder can be installed with ditting grinding discs. Does anyone know how to get a 64mm Ditting disc?

I think you'll find that amount comes out after one or two grinds. I give it a brief purge in the morning to get rid of stale grinds using the finger button up top.

As an aside, I found that removing that silicon flap thingy makes it grind to one side.

So much is written about zero retention but having had a bunch of grinders including the Niche Zero, Ode Fellows and a Weber EG-1, they all vomit out clumps of grinds periodically. I suspect a bit of moisture and a bit of static causes grinds and fines to cling on to the surfaces of the chutes. It's no biggie. I don't use RDT (small spray of beans before grinding) and that would probably help. I use a little rubber rocket ship blower thing after I grind each time and that pushes most of it out.

I have found that the 'flat head' attachment to my Miele C3 vacuum cleaner fits perfectly in the chute opening (after removing the vertical tube) :O

I’m now deciding between H1 and Niche. One I’m trying to find out with H1 is ground retention and how easy it is to align burrs. Sorry a bit of a novice with grinders but looking forward to upgrade my Smart Grinder

if anyone can share some info would be highly grateful! Thanks!
