Thanks for your help. I ended up with a second hand Rocky, which I picked up today. I'm happy with my choice and looking forward to the next coffee!

I’ve used both of them as my main grinder at one stage but never compared them side by side. Off memory the Breville does tend to clump more (you’ll end up with different densities in your portafilter if you don’t do some distributing like WDT). That said, Rocky has clumps too but probably less.

Rocky is built like a rock (no pun intended) and assuming you look after it, it should last a lifetime.
A downside is you have to hold the grind button on the Rocky (ie you can’t multitask) when grinding and there’s no option to grind by time or dose whereas you can grind by time on the Breville (which helps a bit with consistency every day). There are ways around this but... it’s just extra steps.

I’m glad you’re willing to consider a 2nd hand Rocky as I got mine 2nd hand for $200 and sold it for the same price so it was essentially free. A brand new Breville is around $200 or less if you can get it on special.

Assuming they’re at the same price (2nd hand Rocky vs new Breville) I would recommend the Rocky if you want better grind quality (anecdotal advice rather than scientific). Breville if you want convenience and ease of use.

Breville Smart Grinder vs Rancilio Rocky

    Hi,

Looking for some advice on a couple of grinders, I realise it might be like comparing apples with oranges...

I'm looking to source a new grinder to pair with my Gaggia Classic. I make at least 2 milky coffees per day, currently I'm using a second hand sunbeam grinder that's been fixed up, but since I've upgraded my machine I'm looking to do the same with my grinder.

I've come across a few older Rancilio Rocky's which seem to hold their value well and are within my price range, as are the Breville Smart Grinders.

Are they even comparable? Curious as to what would you prefer with a similar set up?

    Thanks.

    Brendan.
