  • Quiet(er) grinders

I'm putting this out to the greater forum to see what peoples experiences have been in the search for quieter coffee grinding at home.

I originally upgraded last year form a Smart Grinder Pro to a Eureka Mignon E. Initially I had thought this to be a little quieter than the SGP, but have recently had my bubble burst! My better half has pointed out that it's not any quieter, and my 4 year old is not happy with the noise either.

So are there any recommendations when it comes to quieter (and affordable) electric coffee grinders for home? Am I chasing something that isn't practically achievable? I am otherwise extremely happy with the Mignon, but if an upgrade or change can improve the acceptance factor, then I am all ears.

    Cheers!

    Hi Whorl,

I believe the Eureka silenzio and above models (specialita, xl, atom etc) have more inbuilt features for quiet grinding than the mignon E. I'd suggest the easiest upgrade would be to a silenzio which is supposedly 20db quieter than the mignon E, but otherwise very similar.

This was my original thought, and likely what I will pursue. I guess I wanted to put it out there to see what peoples actual experiences are, and if I am missing a reasonable alternative that I haven't really considered yet.

Note sure of your budget but the niche zero is quiter than most. 360rpm from memory.

Probably beyond my budget. The NZ has always looked good, but single dosing doesn't really appeal to me at the moment. Thanks!

I had a SGP and they are great machines. To muzzle the noise if grinding when others were asleep I would throw a thick bath towel over it. Most of the noise comes from the rear so you can keep the front uncovered. Saves a new grinder.

Something I hadn't considered! I may give this a shot and see how it plays out!

If you only need keep the noise down at certain times (eg while every one-else is sleeping) a hand grinder may be an option.

Not sure if it meets price criteria but Eureka Atom is super quiet, of 20 odd different grinders I have used it is the quietest by far, followed by Niche Zero.

I haven't used Mignon grinders but have used most Mazzer models and the low end Macap/Compak grinders.

Also consider grinding speed too. Larger burr grinders will generally grind quicker, so the noise will be short lived. EG my Atom 75 grinds ~22g in around 2.8s compared to my old Breville SGP which was well over 10s.

I had a Sunbeam EMO480 for years and then upgraded to a Silenzio last year.
          I was a massive difference.
I have since succumbed to upgraditis and now have a Lagom which is so quiet you can forget that it is on and still very very quiet while actually grinding.
I gave the Sunbeam to a friend recently and, while showing them how to use it, I could not believe how loud it was.
The Silenzio is a great little grinder and very quiet.
I ran it as a single doser by weighing my beans before adding them but the timer also works well if you are not trying for “Godshots” with every coffee.

Thanks for sharing your experience. As much as I would love something like the Lagom, my budget definitely would not support such a beast.
Sadly, I'm now stuck trying to figure out a Silenzio addition to the budget. This is under the presumption that the "teacosy" method above doesn't pan out! 😂

In my experience I have found that out of the four grinders I have owned they are all loud to varying degrees, but they have all sat in a corner surrounded by tiles.

My current grinder is a Mignon XL (same silent grind tech as the other Mignons) which replaces a Quamar Q50P. I would rate them as similar loudness, but the bigger burrs of the Mignon grind faster so the apparent loudness to the rest of the family is less.

I have eureka atom, personally think its quiet. I had the breville smart grinder that was loud in comparison

Check out my post which started off as a "what grinder" and turned into a Silenzio comparison to my Breville.

Coming from the Breville I found the Silenzio so much quieter, but it's not just the loudness, the pitch is so much more pleasing too.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to make the Sylvia water pump quieter
