  • Eureka Mignon Oro Single Dosing

    Hey Guys,

Was browsing Home Barista and noticed there was some talk about a new Single Dosing grinder from Eureka that's popped up recently at a trade show. They link to a german forum with some pics:

    https://www.kaffee-netz.de/threads/e...dosing.137623/

From what I can gather, it's a modified Mignon Oro (65mm flat burrs) with reconfigured internals and a cute little SD hopper.

Eureka apparently posted an Instagram sneak-peak video, but I don't have an Instagram account and I don't care enough to make one

Looks like a direct competitor to the Niche.

Was just about to pull the trigger on an XL after waiting months for those to come out, now looks like I'll be waiting for another few months for these to emerge in Australia...

Yep- should shake them up and given the elimination of the timer, I'd be expecting that it will place pressure on their pricing as well.

Here's hoping it brings about an end to their crowdfunding shenannigans.

As I recently commented in another post, it won;t be long before another contender knocks em off the perch.

Coffee snobs are a notoriously fickle bunch,

I've no doubt the the Niche is a very good grinder, regardless, keep your eye on the for sale section, only a matter of time before bargains start to appear.

      Interesting looking prototype.

Chassis appears to be based on the regular Mignon, tilted forward on that new base.
Looks like possibly an integrated scale below the dosing cup?
      Much larger grind adjustment knob.

Interesting it still has provision for a portafilter fork and button. Less re-tooling to be done.

I have the Mignon XL Oro, which is the model shown next to that new slanted mignon in the photo in the link above. I've already commented on it here but the XL has 64mm burrs, sound dampening (specially on the hopper). This new slanted model seems to be an incremental improvement over the XL for single dosing, which was itself an incremental improvement over the Mignon Specialitat / Silencio. The XL retains a bit of grind in the chute. I dislodge it by rocking the whole grinder but I'd expect the slant on the new model to improve this. Still, it seems to me that the best solution would be a rocking chute like found on the EK43.

I also have the Oro XL and couldn’t be happier.

I have tried single dosing and it works quite well, but have discovered that the timed function is so consistent that I don’t bother single dosing any more. I imagine a single dosing model would only be incrementally better.

My Niche arrives next week so it will be interesting to make the comparison.

A nice close up shot of the single dosing hopper. Hopefully they'll be releasing some more info soon like a video in use.

Have you received the Niche yet? Have you had a chance to compare the Oro XL against the Niche?

I received the Niche on Thursday and it is still in its box.

Unfortunately I am currently working long hours, but hip to open it tomorrow and do the comparison. I will let you know how I go.

Eureka is a high quality brand, same burr size but flat vs NZ conical. Would be very interested in a comparison. My guess would be both are excellent but different. But ... "different how?".

Looks like they are getting close to releasing. I found a new page which has a few more details on this machine. Confirmed 65mm diamond burrs, 3 colours (black, white and chrome).

Exciting option, especially given the limited manufacturing of the NZ and now lack of Aus support. Wonder what the price will be? Similar to the Mignon XL or specialita...Or will be it be $100 less than the NZ?

My guess would be similar to the XL, given the similar specs.

Yes you lose the screen & timer, but it looks like they're including belows with them...and those fancy wood accents!

The more I see it, the more the design is growing on me...but I'm happy with my Atom 75.

What makes you think there will be bellows @tronn?
I'd be more excited If it single doses without the need for pumping on bellows, which is what it appears they are claiming it to do.

The link jlbro provided had some specs, and it says they include the "Mignon Blow-Up System". The Blow-Up System is what they call their bellows.

                    • #13
Even with my NZ and EG-1 I still need a bellows to blow small amounts of coffee grinds out. And that includes when using RDT. I have no idea how, but they seem to accumulate otherwise and then one day they just fall out in a clump.

I am actually finding single dosing with the NZ a bit of a pain and I can’t see the XL single dosing being any different. There is just more mess that the XL Oro.

That said, I do like how easy the NZ is to dial in, but I think my preference lies with having a hopper…and after a couple of weeks I think the XL Oro produces better espresso.

But I might get the single dosing version to compare because I just can’t help myself!

That's an interesting comment Dipendente. Could you update your thread where you compare the XL with the Niche Zero with more of your findings.

bernardd I plan to this coming weekend. I no longer work from home, so my experience is through the prism of getting out the door and on my way to work.

Hmmm ... I know "mess" is a relative term, but I don't get much with my NZ. What's happening Dipendente ? a lot of clumps or excess grinds?

I am referring to stray grounds and also the fact that unless I wait a minute or two for the static to discharge a lot more ends up on the bench than I planned for.

We find the same thing happens when single dosing with the Ceado E5SD. But then you add a water spray and the static and stray grounds are virtually eliminated. I wouldn't be surprised to see more manufacturers add a water spray bottle and water-resistant burrs to their single dosing grinders.

Re stray grounds. I grind into the Portafilter with a tall Decent funnel. Pic attached. That minimises the mess. RDT will help with the static issue.
