  • Setting up a Macap M2D

    Hi Coffee Snobs,

I'd just spent an hour and went through around 200g of beans last night to get the grind setting on my new M2D grinder right with regards to particle size and dose. I walked away for an hour and when I came to start grinding, the grind was definitely much finer so I went through the whole process again until I was happy.

This morning I went back to it and the same problem came up. Grind was finer than I when I left it.

Am I doing something wrong? This is so frustrating!

Might need more details on your exact process. When dialing in a) did you have plenty of beans in hopper, or were you trying to approximately single dose? regardless of which approach, were you consistent across shots?, b) when you decided to adjust the grind did you purge the retained grinds before testing the effects? It's easy to get caught 'chasing your tail' if you don't purge the retained grinds between adjustments.

+1 what Barry said....still have my trusty (micrometric) M2D for backup and it has always been very good and very consistent - one of the main reasons I got it - used to single dose for 'spro exclusively (it can be done, lol) - BUT you need to be consistent in your approach. Changing beans can be fun, too.
FWIW adjustments used be a little challenging sometimes, but were not that big a deal - turning coarse instead of finer sort of thing, part of my learning journey.
One handy hint that worked for me was to use a couple of small bits of tape on the dial/ outlet to indicate your basic sweet spot for reference when adjusting...if it gets really weird, there's a "home".
Almost forgot...the M2's do retain a little so remember to run a purge between adjustments otherwise you may burn through a heap of beans and only adjust one thing at a time - dose size will affect your shot too.
Hopefully you're weighing for consistency at least until you get dialled in 100%, the timer became a nuisance in the end for me.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up just stepping away and coming back the next day with a 1kg bag of beans. I emptied the hopper and started again. This time, I made sure I ran quite a bit through the grinder after each adjustment and it seems to be working well now.

I have a M2M and it is amazingly consistent 95% of time and built like a tank. But recently after giving it a good clean by pulling it apart and putting it back together it took close to a fortnight and 3kg of beans to get it back to where it was, the grounds were clumping really badly, I'd get it right, then the next morning it would clump again.

So I can sympathize with the result seemingly changing but don't worry once she settles in it will be a great grinder.

I thought I'd add to my original post. After a few months I seem to have found my sweet spot with the grinder. Thanks for the tips everyone.

The one point I feel I need to add, as it might help a new user in the future, is to make sure that the "trap door" on the bean hopper isn't at the back near the grind adjustment screw is as it's just at the wrong height and they can interfere with each other. I'm sure that this was the cause of my earlier problems. Good luck!
