  • Alternatives to Fellow Ode

    Hey brains trust,

After 4 years of hand grinding with a Lido and the move to working from home regularly I’m in the market for an electric grinder. I’m 100% filter, most of it pour over but with a bit of AP and French press thrown in when I want to spice it up.

The current leading option is an Ode, probably with an SSP burr upgrade. Should I be considering anything else at a similar price range?

    Cheers!

Not really unless you want to go crazy with an EK with dedicated burrs. The Ode is brilliant out of the box. Try it that way before you spend up on SSP. The native burrs are excellent.

I just got an Ode. Agonised for a few days over Virtuoso+ v Ode. The V+ is a known quantity, grinds fast and well and has timed grinding, great service. But the Ode is faster, quieter, reportedly grinds a bit better and is sexy AF. The clincher was the new burrs for the Ode. They have a slightly upgraded set (V1.1) available now and a new set that are even better (V2) coming. Australian stock has the original burrs though. But It only cost me $75AUD to order the new ones from Fellow. The next shipments from Fellow to Aus suppliers will have v1.1, probablt later this year.

When V2 are available, they will go into the current Ode, not a new version. I imagine that means they will also sell for $40 USD.

Retention and mess have been a non-issue for me so far using the RDT method and even the original burrs seem to be a big upgrade on my Encore (using Aeropress) based on early impressions.
