  • Grinder upgrade recommendations

Hi all, just need some help in finding my next grinder.
ATM I have a Compak K3 paired with Rocket Giotto.
    I single dose for espresso.
Looking for a versatile grinder which I can adjust between espresso and filter. Single dosing doesn’t bother me if the grinder has a reliable timer dosing function. No NZ recommendations please. Price around $1K ??
    Thanks

I used to own a K3, didn't like it. My primary grinder is a BNZ Conical and I recently bought a Baratza Sette 270 to travel with as the BNZ weighs about 15kg and proved too bothersome to lug around.

The Sette had lots of adjustment (270 steps) and I was very pleased with how quickly it got through 40g of beans in about 20s for our morning plunger brews. I recently ordered the new Picopresso and looking forward to using that with the Sette on our next trip if it arrives in time.

The burrs drop the grinds straight down so there's basically no grind retention. I give the thing a few sideways bumps with my hands to loosen the minimal amounts of left over grinds.

It has 3 preset buttons for grind time and you are able to programme it up to your liking. The WI version weighs, I didn't buy that one.

Noisier than the BNZ but for us it's a travel grinder for hotel rooms so that's the least of our worries.

Spare parts are readily available and seem reasonably priced, if required.

Purchased from Coffee Parts in the morning, collected about lunchtime, tested that afternoon and packed up in the original box for travel the next day.

A very popular choice for on demand grinder under 1k is the Eureka Specialita. hard to say how much of an upgrade over your K3 though. The other highly acclaimed grinders (Niche etc) will be a bit over 1k.

I’ve been looking at the Eureka range, could be good thing.

It’s the K3 Push… i’ve had it for nearly 10years and it’s time to move it on. I think it’s a great grinder for newbies.

HeyCafe H1 is a little over your budget but fits the bill well otherwise. Other option is the D64 but you'll probably need an after market dial indicator of some sort (3D printed or a cable tie)

I currently run the H1 and the Niche and have been very impressed with the performance of the H1.

Works an absolute treat for either espresso or filter.
