  • Compak K3 - up to the task?

I've had this grinder for a few years now paired with my Breville Barista Express. It's served me well and hasn't skipped a beat.

But I'm soon upgrading to an E61 heat exchanger machine (most likely the Lelit Mara X) and am wondering if the Compak K3 will be the limiting factor in that setup. We go through <1kg a week. I'm happy with a doserless grinder.

    Thoughts welcome, thanks.

Unless you've put 200Kg+ through the current burr-set, the K3 will be perfect...

Thanks Mal! To be honest I have no idea how much we've used but at a rough calculation of usage over the past 5 or so years, probably less than 200kg. I had planned on replacing the burrs if keeping the K3 and upgrading the espresso machine anyway - but maybe I don't need to just yet.

Thanks and more opinions are welcome ?

Loads of very happy and satisfied K3 CSers here, over many years of use...

You'll probably be able to get more out of the whole set up with a better grinder, but how much and at what cost/benefit ratio is highly subjective. What level of roast do you normally use? What type of coffees are you making? Are you happy to do prep work before pulling a shot, or do you just want to grind tank and pull a shot straight away? What do you want out of your coffee that you're not getting now?

If you drink mostly milk-based coffee, my experience has been that you don't need a very expensive grinder - difference in the cup would be minimal. K3 would be fine unless you need other features like timed-dosing or zero retention.

wow. as a newbie still learning the ropes this comment blew me away (i recently acquired a compak k3 touch advanced)

I'm still trying to learn how to appreciate espresso and learning the nuances. but wife and the vast majority of people who will drink the coffee i prepare will be milk-drinkers - flat whites, cappuccino, lattes. in which case the breville-low level grinders combos will satisfy these guys 99% of the time! will the beans change the taste or is that a same-same but different as well?

I see myself as newbie too although have gone through a few different grinders over the past few years. don't get me wrong though grinders are still one of the most important factors in coffee, the beans would make the most noticeable difference in the cup.

I'm using a Compak K3 with my Profitec Pro 300 dual boiler machine. While I'd like a timed grinder to get more consistent dosing, I'm sure upgrading the grinder would make minimal difference to the milk based drinks I commonly make.
